I worked for 3+ years in the design and construction department at a Black owned REIT that built, renovated, and managed Marriott and Hilton Hotels. My boss was Black and one of the other Assistant Project Managers was Asian. When we'd show up on site for inspections or to directly manage projects and run meetings with contractors, we were the only minorities involved in the project at a non laborer level. The Latino's and White construction workers were always so surprised to see more than one Black person in leadership position on site that they thought I was my bosses son.
As a department we had vendor control over where our money was spent, but good luck finding Black owned architecture firms, project managers, engineers, and manufacturers. Between the unions and the preferred vendor lists and pre-existing special relationships with procurement companies involved in the design build process there's a high barrier of entry for minorities to get equal representation in the industry. It's all about contracts. If we can secure more contracts we can employ more folks who are under represented.
