An actor I've never heard anyone refer to as black ever. He presents as white and he doesn't identify as black. No one's claiming him. But a few want to act as though people who were/are viewed as black within a historical framework means somehow African Americans are all claiming people who look like Kelly Ripa.

Yet they don't want to address the fallacy of saying someone like Quincy Jones or Emayatzy Corinealdi isn't black.

I am speaking of blackness in the black diaspora context. Blackness is tied to lineage. Therefore, the people with the most African lineage should be the barometer from which to measure your in-group not the ones with the least. African americans are a subgroup of Americans because of their unique history and lineage. You cannot claim that a white person is black just because he fought for black rights or married a black person or has some marginal black ancestry.

White, William Jefferson (1832-1913): Born to a white planter and mulatto slave, William Jefferson White was a cabinetmaker by trade and minister by vocation. Born in Elbert County, Georgia, he was taken to South Carolina as a child and returned to Augusta as an adult. He trained in carpentry at the Goodrich Lumber Company and later worked as a cabinet and coffin maker for the Platt Brothers, a furniture and undertaking firm.
