Bumping this thread.

I remember championing Coo Coo Cal in the early 00s because he was the first Milwaukee rapper to get national attention. i.e. my avi on the coli

Any midwest heads wanna drop knowledge on what your area was bumping in the mid/late 90s? Any dope local acts yall remember?

HOW ABOUT THE BUL GINUWINE?

there hasn't been a better overall male r&b singer/entertainer combo since he came out. theres artists that may have been more commercially successful on the crossover, but they werent messin wit Ginuwine.

FEELS LIKE IM WATCHING RAP CITY RIGHT NOW

HOW ABOUT CHINO XL. he was Eminem before Eminem. just a half a shade too dark, I guess.

CRAIG MACK returned with a hit on a smaller label.
before o.j. da juiceman, there was Raheem chancellor THE JUICY MAN.:krs:

they did a great job of wipining bone thug/mo thug out the record books. we already knew the industry hated them tho. we saw it coming.

I remember when "dayz of our livez" hit the radio here, instantly #1 on the request shows right when the school year started. the perfect follow-up to crossroads/perfect set-up for "set it off".

reverend run coming out of semi-retirement with the double-time on "world so cruel" BEFORE BIGGIE did it.

mo thugs. SOULJAH BOY, TRE, the whole crew

Thug devotion was so dope to me, but listening now, its even better than before a feel good song without being corny.

"Coming with the automatic weapon status All my thugs is here for ya safety and everybody be glad we have it. "

This line stands out because it's so real. As a youngin my pops always made sure the fam was str8 when we would throw parties and BBQ. His boys was ready, but not overly trying to be hard. The good old days. Reps and dap my nikka 4 real.

They cannot write none outta the history books, them boys dropped nothing but MULTI PLATINUM albums and singles through the the 90's

:salute:

"ace this game when they try to erase us" - layzie bone '98

youre right. they cant write them outta history. but they keep trying. even back then. look at how far back they were sitting when they won that soul train award.:scusthov:

yea thug devotion is classic. the REAL souljah boy. I remember it was a staple on "bet hit list" & the box. would've been bigger if "dayz of our livez" wasn't out at the same time.

remember ICP dropping Great Milenko and it getting pulled off shelved 6 hours later by Disney?

I remember seeing that video on the box, thinking it had something to do with dean malenko.:snoop:

they ended up having their own wrestling promotion, so I still kinda thought it had something to do with dean for a while.:mjlol:

It's crazy how every two year interval in the 90s is like it's own mini era , for instance you can tell the drastic difference from 96-97 & 98-99 instantly just by hearing a song or looking at the atheistics of a video

yep

this is why I laugh when people try to bring up longevity concerning more modern artists. longevity doesn't mean anything anymore. its just the same ole rappers in a good ole boy network, making the same chit over & over.

back in the day, if you made it to the next 2 or 3 year interval, you were winning.

shoot, we can go even further. different seasons of a year often felt like a completely different year to themselves. nowadays, you gotta go back 5-8 years for a different feel of the culture.

man I miss music.

Yep I still got tapes of BET Rap City "Old School Wednesday" where in 1996 they were playing stuff from 2 or 3 years earlier like

or

and it felt like a whole different era even then.

Think about it: The 1988 Golden Era was only 8 years prior but it felt like 20 years. 2009 doesn't feel that far away to us now, especially sonically.
