Thanos is a Titan....they're kinda OP out the gate. The gauntlet is really just a tool for mass destruction, he could very easily 1v1 many superheroes and win. So they made him interesting by making him a fiend for the gems. The story arc proved to be very lucrative (obviously) as everyone loves a looming villain who has the potential to destroy the universe.
Comparing him to Superman is fair, as he is one dimensional, but all the best villains/superheroes are...Batman, Joker, Lobo, Lex Luthor, etc.

Thanos actually got a lot closer than Darkseid, also the Infinity Gem arc is far more exciting than anything Darkseid has done.

Sure he is....he hates Superman so much, he made a suit powered by kryptonite that gave him cancer in his right hand....
He's never important unless its to take down Superman...story arcs have been solely about this....literally.

The truth is....people really only follow Lex if Superman is involved. His one-offs never get any love. I did however like Superman; Earth One, with both Luthor's, but again, this is about Superman.
The point isnt that he only wants to get rid of superman, it's why. Theres far more depth to his hatred of supes than just wanting to kill the hero for no reason
