West where the Sunsets
Short answer.

China has turned into a huge market for American entertainment. They have about 1.5 billion people compared to our 300 million.

American movie studios are absolutely market-testing and putting things in movies that they think will make it more popular with a Chinese audience.

That whole thing recently with Houston Rockets owner tweeting about supporting the Hong Kong protestors and Lebron James' subsequent comments is due to all the money potential there.

So you're right. Blockbusters in particular are supposed to be able to make money everywhere, but more and more, studios are seeing the potential of the Chinese market and are making sure to (at the very least) not annoy them. They don't seem to like Star Wars for example. I've heard it's because they already have enough authoritarian regimes in their life so they don't like seeing that in their escapist movies, and I've heard others say it's because they didn't have the nostalgia of growing up with Star Wars.

Regardless, the Chinese market will be an especially important market for the media and entertainment business going forward.

EDIT: China Film Market to Eclipse U.S. Next Year: Study (Exclusive)

I understand the marketing reason, but just because the climax doesn’t take place in America doesn’t mean it’s not a film for Americans. :dead:

Alien
Predator
Terminator
Star Wars
Indiana Jones
Jurassic Park
Ghostbusters
Rambo
Men in Black

What young and aspiring filmmaker wanna work on creative bankrupt projects with studio meddling?

As bad as the new terminator is, it's not as bad as that God awful Shane Wack Predator. One of the worst movies this decade.

And they destroyed the Alien franchise. The Predator franchise and the Terminator Franchise. All within the past 3 years. :mjtf:

All of those franchises just need a 10+ yr break at this point. Then just do a full reboot... no sequel shyt.

Blomkamp should have been allowed to do his Alien flick instead of the last 2 shyt shows we got from Ridley.

Rambo shouldn't be included on this list... The last two flicks weren't bad

But yeah not surprising this bombed. After the last three flicks, they should have made sure Cameron was directing. And they should have seriously insisted on him, if they were gonna dump 200mill into this

Why isn't Cameron more hands on with the terminator franchise? Does he just not care anymore? The reason the rambo flicks are still good is because of Stallone's input
