The Amerikkkan Idol
The Amerikkkan Nightmare
Because boxing is a corrupt ass sport with too many sanctioning bodies.I’m no causal but also not a diehard so I’m genuinely asking this :
Why does it seem every boxer becomes a ‘record’ champion at some point? Like it’s really just a technicality.
Feels like every boxer that gets pushed is ‘first ever 4 division champ’ or ‘first to hold all 4 belts’. From Crawford to Haney to shakur even back to adrien Broner who wasn’t even elite for long. Seems like such a formality/technicality
For most of boxing's history, there was ONE champion in each weight class.
Originally, there were only 8 weight classes 112, 118, 126, 135, 147, 160, 175, HW
Then, in the '60s, they added another belt with the WBC, so there was 2
They also added more weight classes 105, 108, 115, 122, 130, 140, 154, 168, & cruiserweight.
So, you go from 8 champions to 34 champions
Then in the '80s, you add the IBF, so now there's 3 sanctioning bodies & belts
Now, you have 51 champions through 17 weight classes
THEN, in the mid 2000s, they added the last sanctioning body, the WBO.
So, now you have 68 champions in 17 divisions
All of this is happening because the sanctioning bodies each take 3% of the fighters purse of their championship fights, so for example, Terence Crawford is going to have to pay the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO 3% each of his $20 million purse.
So, basically, what we're celebrating is Terence Crawford being the 1st guy to ever have to pay 12% of his purse to 4 different sanctioning bodies, just so he could look like a bad ass holding a bunch of belts.
Plus, that's not even counting the ceremonial "Lineal" & "Ring Magazine" belts that are not official, but are still considered important.
So, now you see how extremely convoluted & stupid all of this is.
