Why did I know after the first few words of the the thread title that this would be in NJ and NY?

Growing up there, I didn't know black men were different than men from elsewhere until I left. The thirst to be viewed as a tough guy is so strong unlike other place I've been. I've heard Chicago is the other place in America that is like it but I haven't seen it.

But you better not walk down the street without a or attitude. Better not sing in class or smile too often. Such a shame that our men can't grow up free of the pressure to pretend to be so masculine and tough. I wish kids could just be kids, cry, laugh and sing like other kids. There are always several cultural forces always at work. So your idea that race relations should lead to less hostility could be a true. It could definitely be shaping people's attitudes but simply not be the dominant force that shapes behavior. I believe the two most dominant forces driving behavior in the Northeast (basically from Boston down to Philadelphia) are the intensity of capitalism (and competition) and the weather. People move to New York from all over the country to try and make it in every industry (except maybe oil). Thus you have the best of the best in all these different fields competing for slots in whatever field they are in. The intense competition leads to the hostility that I mentioned. People are blunter, crasser and have a shorter temper than in the South or West. You can see this in all races of people in the Northeast, not just blacks. The weather comes in to play more in the South and West than in the Northeast. People tend to be happier more often (ALL ELSE BEING EQUAL) or at least more laid back in the South and West than in the Northeast.

So the way this manifests itself with black people is that (1) we are blunter and ruder to each other in the Northeast than other places and (2) the competition encourages us to tear down each other more. People are very quick to snap on you and find something wrong with you appearance, lifestyle, attitude, etc. I'm not saying this doesn't happen other places. I just think it's worse. I'm probably biased but I've lived in Ohio and Maryland and the vibe is just different. There are plenty of tough, guys, gangsters and thugs in these places, but they aren't trying so hard to prove it to you. They will actually be pretty chill with you when some shyt is not going down. In NJ/NY, you get the screw face all day, everyday.

One thing that I think really supports my theory is rap music. Look at the rap music that came out of New York in the 90s compared to the West and the South. It was dark, hard, rough (Black Moon, MOP, Wu-Tang). And in regards to me saying that Chicago is the the other place that this exists, compare the intense violence of Chicago drill music with the twang of Cali or playfulness of ATL.

This is just my theory, my opinion, how I see it playing out. It's far from perfect . I am sure it is flawed in many respects. But it's what I think. Maybe I'm on the right track. Maybe not.

It's impossible to expect every person in the race to not act up. Especially since we have higher rates of poverty and other social issues.

And they never will fix their perceptions because they don't want to.
