I don't know how old you are but I graduated in 1995.

It's likely the magnet schools function how they're intended to (in DC, like you said) in other areas. But the magnet program here was implemented to desegregate the schools and draw in more white students. It didn't work though. To this day the school district is majority black.

I think various reasons
-The debt is not making higher education an incentive to young men that can make quick money
- Change in learning / teaching methods
- Not enough support at the foundational level
- Trade school is cheaper

You also have to consider in the US, plenty of scumbag parents personally hold "teachers" to a much higher standard than they themselves would ever hold themselves to. They want teachers to parent their children, entertain them, educate them, teach them right from wrong, be their therapists, babysitter, but NEVER hold them accountable, NEVER judge them, and NEVER criticize them. All this while scoffing at teachers getting paid more money, asking parents for their time, asking parents to enforce any rules, and especially asking parents to provide basic necessities for their kids to succeed meaning that "we pay taxes, that should cover it". Most schools in the US are under staffed, there is no money in the budget to pay teachers, provide free lunch, provide the tools kids need to succeed past the most basic level of education, so 95% of the time it falls on the teacher to have to cover the tab on anything "extra", and a good amount of teachers are poor asf already, but will give their last penny to make sure "their" kids don't go without. It is really a thankless fukking job, but to deal with the extra bullshyt, I'm surprised there are even any teachers left. If my kid wanted to be a teacher, and I wasn't stable enough to pass on to her generational wealth, I would flat out tell her fukk NO (she didn't become a teacher, and I don't have generational wealth, I'm just giving scenarios, however my sister has been a teacher for 25+ years in some of the poorest cities in the country, and have witnessed this shyt myself)

They tried to implement uniforms in elementary. American schools are too freedom focused the kids rejected them.

So off the top in american schools kids have far more autonomy than in foreign schools.

All the athletic programs ate designed to enhance student interest not just physical education

We had P.E. class but there's no way they could organize a sports day like they do over there.

For example I rarely went to my PE class until I went to a school for drop outs where the teacher Mister Jackson would challenge kids to step in the ring to fight him * he taught us Kenpo Karate* none of us gangstas took him up on his offer.

These teachers dealing with bad ass kids all day can’t tell em nothing cause parents ready to fight bout they kids.

Then kids coming to school sick throwing up and shyt, snotty noses.

Plus you have to deal with the emotional drain and attachment to kids that come to school hungry and dirty cause their parents live in poverty and you wanna do something about it but can’t.

Teaching is a thankless job. Couldn’t pay me to do that shyt. They’re basically babysitting AND trying to teach your kid how to read, math, writing, science, etc,.

we aren't even talking about all the perks Teachers and Cops get.

The job is underpaid and it's not underpaid. They're well compensated for what the job entails. The problem is it falls under the category of being dirty and dangerous so at any salary the job could be "not worth it" But being a traffic cop or a teacher in an area with two parent families with an average salary of 150K is getting over like a fat rat.

Did you move to KCK?

Don't really know much about Kansas, only been out there a handful of times. I lived in Leavenworth briefly as a child. Was born and raised in midtown Kansas City, Missouri. 30th and Charlotte, 36th and Virginia, etc.

The two cities (Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas) border each other so where they connect is basically the same for a few miles in either direction.

And yeah you're right there is really no boundaries as far as the "good" and "bad" areas. The $850 million Power & Light entertainment district is literally 10 minutes away from blocks that look like Chicago, Baltimore, or any comparable area. The Hallmark world headquarters is also roughly the same distance. There's some beautiful areas but anything outside of them gets exponentially worse the farther you go.
