Avengers if for the kids.
Stylistically, Nolan regressed severely from Batman Begins. Ledger was his saving grace in The Dark Knight. He tried the same style with TDKR and it predictably fell flat without Heath...even tho Tom Hardy's performance was good.

Same thing with DC and Marvel. DC makes better written and more varied books, but gets less sales. Marvel has pretty art and characters that are more flawed, yet (somewhat) relate to their audience.
Yet DC has their characters strive to become better people and heroes, yet only a few Marvel Characters (Cyclops, Thor) do strive to be better people and heroes.

When are batman fans going to going to take the L. More people liked the Avengers better then TDKR. As a comic book fan this movie really insulted my intelligence in the depiction of Batman. Batman honed his skills to fight injustice in Gotham City. Batman has been planing how to fight crime ever since his parents died. So he has been studying and planing but this batman is just a rich guy who became a ninja. Honing his mind was Step 1 and he was doing that since he was kid. So when Talia shows up dude should have red flagged her from jump. But naw this bytch was on his back for 8 years cause some fugly bytch died? I was glad batman caught that ass whopping from bane now that I think about it. How arrogant was this motherfukker thinking he take on anyone when you haven't been in the game for so long? Also I am glad catwoman shot at him with a rocket launcher. At least she was real and cut the shyt.
