Black americans conformed to culture and community across the color spectrum and did this organically. People were "one-dropping" themselves because of this. We even have a thread in the root showcasing this

it literally shows in the populace today in people and culture

New Orleans was influenced by French culture which had a different approach to racial classification. The New Orleans experiment failed because it is a small French influenced state dominated by Anglo Saxon influence which enforced racial purity ideology.

Many of the mixed people who drop back into blackness did so out of necessity and following attitudes changing about blackness especially as black power movement started to make way not because AADOS controlled narrative about racial identification. The AADOS racial classification is a byproduct Anglo attempt at racial purity.

If mixed people had continued to distance themselves from the black majority they would have found themselves in purgatory similar to the coloured of South Africa. Neither belonging to any group and estranged, they would have suffered much more alienating themselves in the long run.

Mixed people stand out more among black people than they do among whites.
