They won the war easily cause they had all the money, the factories, the technology, the recourses, etc, etc. the north moved away from cotton and in turn slavery cause it was less profitable than manufacturing.
The south clung to slavery because it was all they had. They weren't "forming a huge profitable machine" they were holding on to the past, and in no way we're they "doing better" than the north. And there were no resources the north wanted to take from them.
