Kansas City, MO.
saw it this morning. Nice little movie. It clearly wasn't big budget by any means. :whoa:It was just okay. Don't expect a lot. If you like them Taraji-isms then you got what you paid for. She got her Baby-boy cry-face in. And she got her Cookie Lyons street/homegirl-ness in. :pachaha:

The theaters was mostly black women. :lolbron: So yep, they supporting it. :manny:
For those that saw it...towards the end when the "Proud Mary" song came on yall should've heard how all these sisters in the theater i was in started rustling anticipating Taraji bustin them guns. :dead:

If you want to support this movie out of sheer principle and the desire to see more representation, I’d say go see Proud Mary. It’s not terrible, and there are things about it that are very good. It’s just not great.

I like the premise, that we have a hired killer working for a black owned organized crime family. This hired killer just so happens to have a heart and spares the life of one of the children of a mark she kills. She follows this child around, watches over him, and when it counts, she intervenes to save his life. Problem is the boy works as a drug runner for a rival crime family and taking care of him means starting a war.

It’s a really cool set up. But the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Some of the acting (namely the child actor who plays the kid) is uneven, and at times downright terrible, which only exposes how weak the script is. The dialogue vacillates from OTT melodrama to awkward. Sometimes it works though, and when it does, it’s funny and refreshing. I just wish it could have been consistently so. After the movie ended, one of the older ladies sitting next to us said she could have stayed home and saw that on TV. I think that about sums up the feeling I had as well.

I found Danny Glover unbelievable in his role. lol. I just didn’t buy him as a crime boss, and sometimes it felt like his lines were dubbed because he sounded so stiff. Taranji was very good as the hired killer, and she did the best with what she was given. And it was really fun watching her kicking ass. If you’re a Taranji fan, I think you’ll enjoy this movie for that alone.

If you’re looking for more, this may not be your movie. But it’s not the worst way to spend 2 hours.

5 out of 10 for me.

Atomic Blonde is just riding on the John Wick wave.

This looks like it could have more of a modern Jackie Brown influence while also riding on the John Wick wave :russ:

Why do people act like John Wick broke the mold? Like were no action movies with hired hitmen and women before John Wick? :dwillhuh:

This average, you wont see anything groundbreaking here.

The acting wasnt bad from anyone (even critics agree)

They didnt really set up the crime syndicates here like a breh said earlier, you just know they exist.

She was getting her John Wick on, which is always nice.

But they missed a golden opportunity imo when
she went to rescue Danny and she knocked the power out. I would’ve liked to see some stealth type kills. Snapped necks, stabbings, throwing knives, strangles

Is Taraji any athletic or did they choreograph to her strengths?
