The really sad thing is that rather than being slaves, many Cape Verdeans were actually middlemen on the slave trade. It actually represents a unique case as far as colonies with slaves go, because it was one of the very few places where the Black population wasn't simply an enslaved population. Most Cape Verdeans are heavily mixed, not dark-skinned, because all the men were European, but they didn't bring women with them, and all the women were African, from West Africa (the islands were not inhabited before the Portugese settled them.) The entire population is a result of that specific mixture of white men and African women.
