Obviously third partiers mostly see Game Pass and sub services in general as a place their dead games go to find a second life after they've sold through. Even so companies like EA and Ubisoft still have introduced day one subscription services on PC.

I guess my question is if a business model like Game Pass is such a bad idea that most consumers don't want why is Sony investing any resources to suppress it? Why are they cutting deals with third parties to keep games off Game Pass? Why are they running active interference on deals that stand to strengthen it? What company in their right mind expends effort and recourses trying to suppress something that is a non-starter?

If Microsoft wants to burn through billions on a service that nobody wants and can't possibly work why not let them? They're the only company even looking to get into a business model like that. If they fail at it then it dies and nobody will ever try it again.

I don't think anyone was saying any of this. You were really only seeing serious pushback on saying that all media will eventually convert to the subscription model.

But to answer some of your questions, Ubisoft and EA launched subscription services (which don't seem to be as successful as they'd like, based on them both trying to integrate into Gamepass and PS Plus) because PC lagged behind their console sales numbers, and that was the avenue they chose to increase revenues from that channel without having to entirely depend on Steam. Not sure where the idea of Sony actively trying to suppress GamePass is coming from, though. Are we still talking about the language in their marketing deals? If that's the case, and you're still going on about that, then this is more of an argument about understanding how legal teams in business work than anything else.

And the reason you don't let a competitor with more money just blow through money is that it's one of the basic competition scenarios people go through in business school. If your competitor can afford to eat losses for longer than you can, their strategy will, at some point, fall back on basically trying to wait you out. Microsoft is in the unique position of absolutely being able to do that if they so chose.

@GoldenGlove you buckled under the pressure of my joke thread, but you allow these less than joke threads thrive?

This is a tweet, but the subject matter is beyond redundant

Even though the Game Pass has proven successful so far, CEO of Take-Two, the team behind Rockstar Games and 2K, isn’t yet assured that the system can be beneficial to newer titles.

Or in June

Anyone can mane a tweet about anything as long as you're not kyrie Irving, so these dudes will make up reasons TO MAKE UP TOPICS. Just to hide behind "I'm just reporting"

Here's an actual report that goes unreported but is related to this topic indirectly...

Some folks gotta be dragged kicking and screaming to progress. I don't know why they bother. Whether it's a year from now, or ten, subscription services are the future of the industry and will be a thing. He may as well get on board now.
Brokepass can't be the future when other publishers on take two level want $70 up front

Of course it is. With Rockstar, Take Two sets media sales records. Why the hell woyld they want to debut their biggest titles on gamepass and lose money?

Unless you're a microsoft studio or a small developer, I don't think it's a good idea to launch in gamepass. Game streaming is even less sustainable than television streaming.

Wouldn't make sense for take two to launch any of their games on gamepass. However, I do think some of these bigger publishers' riskier games should launch on sub services. I think Ubisoft games not named Assassin's Creed is perfect for it. For example Immortals Fenyx rising would've been a nice game to launch on gamepass since it was a new IP that didn't seem like it was going to make noise. Also, games like Outriders and Rainbow six extraction seemed to have decent benefits by launching on gamepass with positive word of mouth.
