The point is Mary's lane didn't exist before her. She literally innovated an entire subgenre of R&B and was extremely influential in it. And writing or no writing, Beyoncé and Rihanna both have decade plus long careers being relevant, mainstream acts. That's not no easy shyt to do especially as a BW.

Ppl need to let SZA have her moment sans comparison because she has the accolades and all that does is detract from her accomplishments. #1 album for weeks, album almost 4x platinum and her 2 songs released in late 2022 JUST NOW leaving the Hot 100 and tons of impact. Celebrate Solana on her own merits.

yeah i don't compare other than content. people love to bytch about how sza makes depressing music or whatever... that's the only time i've brought up mary in the past as a comparison. mary was damn near suicide on wax lol.
and then in this thread where i am just elaborating on what other people are saying, but actually putting some facts behind my part.
but i always give sza her props regardless and even before the accolades:manny:
like i said if you know you know. the breakfast club has seen all artists come and go so i would trust their recognition.

This ain’t even the right place for this conversation. A bunch of hip heads with fledgling affinity for r&b

SZA is one of them ones. I completely understand the comp. Not classically trained as a vocalist but a 1 of 1 ability to convey pain and emotion into her music. Exact same as Mary

Mary was gettin her ass beat by KC and/or fukin everything that move. SZA hates her own reflection and will look like Lil Kim in a few years. Bout of them are/were very flawed broken women and ironically it conveyed to make great music.
