no disrespect to sza or these other new school females, but they have a very long way to go in this dancery for a mary j comparo. she's the queen of hip hop rb and created her own lane. straight up royalty.

just like aretha, diana, chaka, whitney, anita, were all unique in their own way and had staying power. can't compare relatively new artists until they get a few decades and accolades of success.

She's passed Rihanna already music wise. If they both dropped a brand new song tomorrow I think hers would do better. Ri Ri is like multifaceted with the makeup and clothing lines. Her music is now like secondary to that.
And yeah, it's been 2 albums you comparing to people who been in the game for a decade +.
My first post. I said exactly what I meant. You guys don't read.
"I'm not talking about the past I'm talking about the present time"

SZA is SZA. She's not in the discussion with Beyoncé and Rihanna yet. Give her more time and maybe she'll be there. She's certainly resonating with a larger base of women right now. We need to leave the comparisons for comparisons sake amongst Black female artists in the past.

Like what does SZA actually have in common with Beyoncé, Rihanna and even Mary outside of being BW that the mainstream knows??

That's that recency bias where the newest thing is the best thing. Charlemagne is old enough where he should know better and he probably does but when you paid to talk people often end up saying anything to fill airspace.

No disrespect to Mary but "her lane" was basically created for her, as she was basically just performing on her first album(not writing or producing) and her record label gave her the Queen title straight away lol. That's one of the things that set sza apart, her pen, writing for the Rihannas and beyonces

But no doubt Mary carries the crown very well for sure

Ain’t she like one of the most popping singers right now? What are they talking about?!? You know who could use airtime like this? Ari Lennox. People don’t care about her tho

The point is Mary's lane didn't exist before her. She literally innovated an entire subgenre of R&B and was extremely influential in it. And writing or no writing, Beyoncé and Rihanna both have decade plus long careers being relevant, mainstream acts. That's not no easy shyt to do especially as a BW.

Ppl need to let SZA have her moment sans comparison because she has the accolades and all that does is detract from her accomplishments. #1 album for weeks, album almost 4x platinum and her 2 songs released in late 2022 JUST NOW leaving the Hot 100 and tons of impact. Celebrate Solana on her own merits.
