Vanity Fair: This spring, your team fought back when a producer called your looks and talent into question. Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence have discussed the tendency to knock women performers down when they’re at their professional peak. Why do you think that is?


Sydney Sweeney: It’s very disheartening to see women tear other women down, especially when women who are successful in other avenues of their industry see younger talent working really hard—hoping to achieve whatever dreams that they may have—and then trying to bash and discredit any work that they’ve done. This entire industry, all people say is “Women empowering other women.” None of it’s happening. All of it is fake and a front for all the other shyt that they say behind everyone’s back.

I mean, there’s so many studies and different opinions on the reasoning behind it. I’ve read that our entire lives, we were raised—and it’s a generational problem—to believe only one woman can be at the top. There’s one woman who can get the man. There’s one woman who can be, I don’t know, anything. So then all the others feel like they have to fight each other or take that one woman down instead of being like, Let’s all lift each other up. I’m still trying to figure it out. I’m just trying my best over here. Why am I getting attacked?

It’s not about hating each other. It’s about hating how how society treats women and us not knowing how to verbalize it or deal with it.


You have to learn/be taught not to internalize society’s beauty standards.

So some men get jealous when they encounter a man who is more successful than them. But guess what? If you put in the work you will be like him.

When a woman sees a really attractive woman, especially if she doesn’t look old yet, there’s nothing you can do because women are judged by the looks we were born with. A short, ugly man can still get his money and status up. An unattractive woman can’t actually DO anything about her face (unless she gets surgery or wears make up all the time).

This is why ppl say you’re lucky when you are born with good looks. You were blessed with something that gives you favor and you didn’t have to work for it.

Society is shallow as hell. And ppl understand that a pretty woman can receive great things in life simply because of her looks.


So it’s not about hating other women, per se. It’s hating that society ranks/rates you in a way that you can’t help or change. A man can change society’s perception of him based on his success.

That’s why I said she needs to soak it up and run up the bag. No one wants to say “you’re young and hot and you can get whatever you want right now”.
And she isn’t my cup of tea, but that doesn’t mean I can’t acknowledge that she’s hot right now.
