Both had declined by 87’, but I’m not really sure who was at more of a disadvantage.
I guess Hagler as his reflexes, legs, and movement had slowed. Leonard admits that going to the Mugabi fight and seeing that Hagler was declining (I think Hagler had slowly started declining with the Roldan fight in 84’) made him want to fight Hagler even more.
But Leonard also hadn’t had an official fight in 3 years, and he didn’t even look good in that fight. He was a naturally smaller guy than Hagler. SRL is one of the GOAT at 147 and Hagler one of the GOAT at 160.
Leonard also lost some stamina. Emanuel Steward once said that Leonard’s stamina was as great as anyone ever. He finished stronger than Duran in Montreal despite taking a beating to the body. Leonard got tired after a few rounds against Hagler, had to catch a second wind, and tired again.
I had no problem with the decision, but that judge having it 118-110 was wild.
