nikkas gonna just disrespect banks and immediately write him off knowing they havent bumped him in over a decade and likely hated g unit, acting like comparing them is beneath styles...

if you actually bump banks then you know that his pen is sharper than the vast majority of rappers and no disrespect to him but styles isnt an exception

I love Banks, and I like his mixtape career more than his early career. His own has become incredible. I actually don’t think this thread is very disrespectful to either. I think Banks is a better emcee/rapper, but Styles is a better overall artist, and I don’t mean that as a cop out.

It’s close. Banks’ recent stuff is way slept on.

For some weird reason Banks is one of the more polarizing emcees. I even understand some opinions saying they don’t think this is close, because Styles is truly that legendary, but I see a lot of outright Banks slander on The Coli that I’ve never understood.

Banks outgrew and moved past his punchline gimmick, and became a much more legitimate and well rounded artist. The only real knocks on him are his production and some of the mixing on his work.

But projects like FNO from 2013 are legitimately very artistic works, and not given enough credit.

And BTW I voted Styles P.

If I knew haven’t had a ghetto that was sweeter than here/
You know P would pack his bags and just leave next year/
But I got a son to raise so I’m a stay in this hell/
.....
Never too young to die, or too old to live/
Ain’t it hard to bust your gun, and go home and hold your kid?/
I’m ashamed to sell crack but I’ma ride for the moment/
I know the consequence, I’ma die with the omen/

:wow:

EDIT: the bar about never being too young to die or too old to live is legitimately one of my favorite single bars ever in hip-hop. At 21 I almost died, and at 35 I feel younger and more vibrant than ever. Styles’ bar there is incredibly powerful and inspirational. I think about that line a lot anytime I’m feeling existential dread, or being too hard on myself, or not living life to the fullest. I love Banks, but that one bar from Styles P has had a huge effect on my life.

for the same reason that you still have posters engaging in a jay z vs nas stan war in 2021, a lot of posters are stuck in a time warp of the g unot era and their opinions regarding anything relating to them is automatically tainted, they likely havent given banks' music a chance to witness his growth and evolution as a writer and artist.. theres some people who think he still uses a heavy punchline flow

It’s crazy because I rarely listen to Banks old punchline joints. That’s just not a style that speaks to me besides an occasional trip down memory lane.

I remember Banks did an interview where he said that he wanted to transition from doing punchlines into being the type of artist were people might want to tattoo their bodies with his lyrics because they mean a lot to them; he wanted to develop into that type of an artist.

I don’t know how many lines he has like that that speak to me, but he definitely progressed in that direction and I have a lot of respect for someone to move away from the style that got them success in the first place because of artistic integrity and staying true to themselves.
