dont know why they isolate it to just black boys, it kills blacks self esteem in general. hell, black boys actually have more positive role models in the media than black females.

but of course we'll be damaged when every time we see ourselves in media, we're either criminals, gays, subservient to whites, poor, etc.

people always want to attack music.:smh: actually, urban music boosted the self-esteem of black kids. when i was coming up, it had me feeling like black was the thing to be.

but i wouldnt be caught dead bumpin 90% of the black music on television these days. white folks are clearly dictating the mainstream. only thing that they let be is the dumb-dumb georgia chit. go figure.

as for general television programming, it always gave off the sense that white is the cream of the crop. and it still gives off that feeling.

TV is simply a reflection of the culture in the US. In short, even without TV, living in the US is enough to damage black people's self-esteem. If they're not being exposed to negative images on TV, then people in their lives are imposing negative expectations and thoughts onto them one way or another.

Yup. I don't necessarily think black males lack self esteem on average so obviously TV is not the end-all-be-all when it comes to black male self esteem. And in any case, TV in and of itself is not to blame. Programming is. All children, including Black males, are brainwashed by whatever they take in, whether it involve TV or otherwise. If the brainwashing and programming involves more black images, then black males will get more self esteem. For example, when I started watching football, I gained more self esteem partly because I saw more black guys on TV.

EXACTLY. I reiterate your point. I'm not sure black males necessarily have low self esteem Black media, including music and sports, inspired MORE SELF ESTEEM in me and my friends. But non-black media (anime) inspired less self in me. I think the TYPE of media matters when it comes to black men more than the actual media itself. The issue is that most black boys probably watch what most of America is watching on Saturday mornings, which usually don't feature many blacks.

When I started watching football (which is filled with STRONG black male types), I gained more self esteem but when I read anime (which is full which white and Asian idolatry), I became more insecure.

i dunno fam. watching reccess...vince was the coolest character. watching weekenders/filmore/hey arnold....again the black characters were always the coolest.

then you got all the athletes on tv

outside of that i mainly watched seinfeld, gundam wing, pokemon and dragonball z which didnt exactly slight blk ppl

I didn't feel I lacked self esteem watching all of the above either^. I only started having self esteem problems when I started watching more deep anime and shows with no strong black characters. Seeing black athletes made me feel more assured in black excellence. :yeshrug:

I guess

Maybe this study is correct, maybe media does do this to some black boys
But

I'd have to agree w the posters saying tv was and escape... and helped build me up

In the 80s90s.

I have four sons, I don't let them watch too much shyt, but they don't have anything non damaging to choose from (unlike we had)

Yeah I don't get this.

Black people can't be depicted as villainous, deceitful, amoral, criminal, lustful or slothful because......

I mean I don't know because it sends a bad message to us as a collective.

I don't get this place sometimes.

I guess every black character portrayed on TV should be like Ned Flanders or Hank Hill.

:ohhh: then they'd be carltons and urkels. :francis:

Stereotypical side kick? :mindblown:. This is why no one takes you nikkas serious. First you said there were no black hero's or (POSITIVE) role models in BIG BUDGET films and I proved you the fukk wrong. THEN you moved the goal post and said, well...they not the main character.(You said specifically BLACK HERO's) Even though most of those characters share top billing on the fukking box art and advertising. Then yo dumb ass brought up Mammy's or some stupid shyt. So that's when i just stopped taking yall nikkas serious but like I said move all the goal post you want.

So I guess nobody else belongs in the fukking film besides Neo, because WELL HE DA MAIN CHARACTER. (Trinity must be a bad guy or something by yall logic)

YOU HAVE NOTHING.

You said stereotypical side kick, and I don't even know how the fukk you got that from any of their particular roles. But I digress, you just want something to bytch about.

Now WHERE IS YOUR PROOF OF ALL THESE BLACK CRIMINALS AND VILLAINS IN TV AND FILM

Since its fukking everywhere. SHOW ME.
:mjlol:At this breh using ancient Lethal Weapon and The Matrix:russ::russ::russ:

yea i feel you. i think im a little different in the sense that i never really had a void to fill. i was never a kid-kid. i watched alot of cartoons and stuff too but i was more into what the older kids & adults were watching. and when it came to actual cartoons, i was mainly into stuff like ninja turtles, ghostbusters(had a black), transformers, heathcliff, etc. inspector gadgett was like the only white dude that really had it on smash. his niece penny was HOT SON, but she had alot of pigment. could pass for a light-skinned broad.

the era before i started school, these were a couple of my favorite clips, and they still are to this very day, darn near 3 decades later.
