But I do wonder when we'll get off of the craze of repackaging black pathology for our own consumption and others.
The video obviously hit you in a way it was supposed to if this is the case.
I reckon very few black entertainers will ever hit you over the head with something dope in this day and era like Jay did and still come off as thought provoking.

Gonna have to watch this video a million times cause it's too good.

No matter how much things change, things stay the same. That's the message. Why are we seeing imagery that should of been in the past era of our collective consciousness as americans? Cause that imagery never went away. Hell it's stronger than ever.

See: Bamboozled (Dir. Spike Lee, 1999)
Kendrick made his whole career off this.

(and hate him or love him, Drake is a better artist. Its why Kanye is a better artist. Its why Big Sean is a better artist. You have to push the sound. Message alone won't carry you)

We tried telling you.

I give Jay a pass cause he's SO good at it. But the problem is theres so many attempts that suck complete ass.

selling it and being a culture thief is not game.
jayz is not kyosaki nikka.
he is just a sellout jiggh culture thief.

who made a mockery of hiphop via the rap game in the emotional windfall of big/pac death and was there after the glass ceiling was shattered to pick up a piece.

Stop using terms like ******dom. Chris Rock spoke on how he regrets that skit and you guys take Jay's words to support your own bullshyt. Jay has been talking ownership and shyt from day 1 and very explicitly around kingdom come. The very notion of black pathology has been dismissed @Sagat you guys need to read more. Why are only black people talked about that way?
cause making conscious music is REALLY hard.

Thats why J Cole sucks. Thats why Kendrick sounds contrived.

They try TOO hard.

Lupe barely can do it without appealing to a very small audience.

The Roots tried a few times but never really got anywhere.

Most of these messages are better left as lectures, books, and podcasts. NOT music. No one wants to hear struggle raps from people who arent formally educated unless they're talking flat out ruthless business gems.

Jay does that better than anyone else. And he has the authenticity. And credibility.

I maintain, that the BEST modern example of this I've seen was a combination of the entire YEEZUS album (which is a classic)

He used the images of racist cartoons to remind those who forgot that you are and will always be viewed by others as a N-word.

It was "wake the fukk up" imaginatry. It also a embracing of "yeah - you called me and view me as this - but "fukk you" - I'm Black and I love being Black. You can't embarrass me or make me ashamed of my ancestors or for who I am."

I knew exactly what he was trying to portray and get across. Also, lots of Black people do not know and DO NOT WANT TO know how they are viewed by others and how their ancestors were treated and viewed as in the past.

Black men and women think by dating, having friends, working with people of all colors that means ish is different - and they are different - but they are not. And those non-Black friends and mates that they are kicking with know+ their families know that they don't look at them as the same. Black people need a Black wake up call.

You missed the point then.
It helps to watch the video and listen to the song a few times before making threads like these.
That's the furthest from sellout shyt. And coming from Jay makes it more profound.

you guys are bugg'n.
just cause he call himself jigga don't mean it's jigga boo time.

jigga boo time, was a parody skit featured on the pharcyde album was meant as a prohibitive tale too all this.
that is the very reason why when slim kid tree took the direction pop they no longer drew any more.

now, after all this time.
of people campaigning to have this stricken from the market.
we have to sit through a nikka trying to go back in time.
well might as well set aside the viewing of the tar baby, and breir rabbit, too.

Stop using terms like ******dom.

It's a perfect word for what I'm trying to get across. Has nothing to do with Chris Rock, I'm not a big fan.

Not rocking with my opinion is one thing, telling me what to stop saying is arrogant. Just do you my nikka.

Chris Rock spoke on how he regrets that skit and you guys take Jay's words to support your own bullshyt. Jay has been talking ownership and shyt from day 1 and very explicitly around kingdom come. "Repackaging black pathology for our consumption" sounds to me like he was asking why we still use the type of imagery you see in this new video or in movies like Bamboolzed, I gave him my answer.

You trying to be Mr. Peabody jumped directly to "But the very notion of black pathology has been dismissed! What books are you chaps reading"

:picard:

I'm not disparaging Jay for using them or pretending he just started talking about entrepreneurship.

Agreed.

Last year, I was looking for a house in Atlanta - then I went home to Michigan and realized I could buy land and build numerous houses on the street I grew up on till I was 5 - for way less than half the price of a condo or house in Atlanta. Why buy a 350K house in Atlanta and I can buy half a block plus land plots in Michigan for less than 175K? My parents already own four houses on the block and we have either young family members or long-time neighborhood friends as tenants.

So many houses got torn down on the street - and it's just bare and sad -- I decided then to buy the 6 land plots ($300 a pop) and build homes in that neighborhood where I know everybody and everybody know me and my family.

Even though my father built us a new home in the burbs - we still and have always been right on that street and neighborhood making sure we owned and kept the neighborhood up. It's nothing better than going home and rebuilding and showing care to the neighborhood that raised you and loves you.

I'm sorry - I don't understand.

My comment was not Hip-Hop related - it was being Black related. I could care less how Non-Black people view me or my community. But, I do care how we view ourselves - and we forget or refuse to look back at our history here in America and how our ancestors were treated - and think things are cool now. That's where we as a people mess up. Thinking things are OK now - and it's not.

Hip-Hop now (the majority) has no message - and has lots of the youth and damaged men and women out here making terrible decisions. I loved the video and the message - but I'm not who Jay-Z is trying to reach - cause I know all this - as my daddy put me on early.

I have been looking at some spots in Southwest - lots of rehab options in the range of 30K-40K that can be flipped. But, not for land tho.

I am going to start in Michigan first - my family has been in the Section 8 homes and flipping property for 40+ years. So, I have support to build new 2-3 bedroom homes for 30-40K each. Plus, the permits and making sure land is ready and approved for building is a go - since the city resold the land plots to me.

And yeah, she needs too. Land is TOO affordable in Michigan. Flint, Saginaw and Detroit. And property tax on the land is low too at this time.

But, it's some stipulations - for instance, I was allowed to buy the land cause my family owns homes on the street - if you don't own land on the street - you are not always allowed to buy for that low price.

So, tell her to check that out first - it all depends on the neighborhood.
