It's funny but I can't really rock with this. Literally EVERYONE has played basketball at some point in their lives, and anyone who became an analyst likely played a lot of basketball even if they didn't play it at the high level.

Organized basketball is different than pickup. With the higher the level you go the more knowledge you acquire. Most people who have played basketball don't even know the simplest basketball plays. This is why listening to guys talk basketball on TV who don't even know what "floppy action" is makes no sense. How can you claim to talk about something you really don't understand at all?

How many GMs and head coaches actually played in the league though? It’s ridiculous to try to hold analysts to a higher standard than the people actually running the teams.
But some of these geeks have NEVER had the experience of being the top dog and most dominant player on a court not named their backyard at any point in their lives.

I totally get what he's saying. If you have ever had the experience of knowing most of the time you're better than anyone else on the field or court, there will always be some things that you learn from that experience that only those howve had it at one time or another felt. I see it in the coli all the time with the geek heads

Bill Belichick is a great football coach (and would also be a good analyst) he did not have any real football career.
Same with Mike Tomlin, Andy Reid, Pete Carroll, etc.

These are football references but the same would be true for basketball. Being a former player helps and is a benefit, but not a requirement.

Bill played nose tackle in college, Tomlin played wide receiver in college, Andy Reid played the game as well and Pete Carroll if I remember played multi sports at a college and university.

Not helping the case there breh. They all played at very high levels.

You don’t have to have played in the NBA, but you should have played at least some level of competitive ball to get paid to analyze it.

I think that is what he is getting at and I agree totally.
