Also don't worry so much about your 'build' this is gonna work like Skyrim after they put in legendary ranks where you will be able to level up forever and eventually unlock everything if you want to put that much time into the game.

Yeah you can completely ignore the main quest in this... I wouldn't advise it though. The main quest gets you access to some things faster than if you just explored organically.
