Can someone explain to me exactly why so many die hard Star Wars fans despise what Johnson did with The Last Jedi?

Like I can get someone not liking it all that much, and I certainly think it's a flawed film, but why does it provoke such anger from some Star Wars fans?

I'm not a huge Star Wars fan. The only Star Wars film I enjoy start to finish is The Empire Strikes Back, so I don't understand all the lore but it really befuddles me how the film provoked so much hate and it seems to go beyond just the usual braindead neckbeard mutants that these films attract. Even more senisble level headed fans seem act similarly.

Good Question,

The Last Jedi (TLJ) as a standalone movie is not bad in itself. However, the problem with this movie is that is fit poorly as a sequel to the Force Awakens. What is worse is that it also serves as a bad sequel in a sense to the original trilogy on how it treated the original characters.

Ill start on first why it is a bad sequel to the Force Awakens. First it important to note that say what you want about the Force Awakens it did it job perfectly in establishing 3 new main characters. Finn being the most interesting since he is a former stormtrooper, Poe a hot shot pilot, and Rey with this mysterious background. The Last Jedi ruins this by subverting fan expectation in an unrealistic way. You do not make it a big mystery about who Rey parents are and than simply say they are not important. You do not waste a great actor (John Boyega) and character like Finn and let him go on a stupid casino adventure. Finn was basically a laughing minstrel show in the Last Jedi.. You do not make your hot shot pilot a completely idiot when trying to manage a starship or soldiers...

I do not even want to get into the discussion of how they ruined Luke Skywalker... It was basically character assassination at it finest. It like someone who either hated Star Wars or had no understanding of Luke character wrote this version of him in the Last Jedi. Him also losing to Rey in a short light saber fight was awful...

Star Wars has a long history of rules and things that are well established within the universe. There are characters that we know their personality very well and it has been well established. However, the Last Jedi basically destroys that all....

Anyways its funny seeing the reviews for this movie since I knew there was no way to save this trilogy with the way the Last Jedi ended...

It would be shorter to write a list of what that movie did right. It’s genuinely the worst written film I’ve ever seen in any genre.

It violates every fundamental rule of fiction storytelling, including the most basic of rules, like show don’t tell and Chekhov’s gun (Setup with no payoff. In fact this rule is broken an obscene amount of times in the movie), the reverse of that meaning payoffs that had no setup.

It shows total disregard for the source material.

It’s riddled with plot holes. Practically every scene has at least one.

It spends its run time performing the most egregious character assassination ever seen in a movie.

No character has any sort of arc or progression from where they were at the end of the force awakens or the start of this movie. They’re either the same as they were then at the end of the movie or they’re dead.

It breaks previously established rules of its universe to the point that if these rules are observed it retroactively creates plot holes in the previous films.

It reduces every character except Rey to a bumbling idiot to be used as the butt of a poorly written joke.

It breaks continuity with the force awakens by changing the motivations and actions for characters in that movie.

Most of the film’s run time is spent on a slow motion chase so nothing really happens.

While most films can effectively add a political or social message to it within the framework of the story (A new hope was actually a great example of why the war on terror doesn’t work), this one is so heavy handed and on the nose with it that it actually derails the plot of the film and damages the characters to the point that it takes you out of the movie.

The side plot with Finn and rose turns out to be a total waste of time so damn near a third of the movie is just filler.

It violates the basic three act structure by essentially being one long first act and then a long second act, and then ends with nothing set up for the next film.

There’s more I could write, but these are the most important parts. If I were a film major I could legit write my dissertation on how horribly written the movie is. It’s hard to be a more poorly written movie than the phantom menace when that one didn’t actually have a protagonist or antagonist, but Johnson and Kennedy managed to do it.

They made Jeremy Jahns hate this shyt brehs... :mjcry:

He straight up said it was his LEAST favorite movie of the Skywalker Saga. Worse than TLJ, TPM, AOTC... put that shyt into perspective.

How the fukk do you turn a dude who basically transformed into every 5 year old kid early saturday morning when their favorite shows are on when that TFA trailer dropped into a man who is fighting back tears at seeing his favorite property turn into this mess...?

I guess Disney only option is increase the budgets for upcoming Marvel movies (like Black Panther) and let the MCU do it's thing.

They won't fire Kennedy, but it seems like Feige has the real "force" when it comes to narratives. I mean look at Captain Marvel. It was a blatant feminist money grap, the nerds were hating and it still made a billion :dahell:

fixed.

Grace is not the word to take in anything but comic stuff.

If that blonde chick on collider hates it, it over. Done. Kaput. She's like the most positive start wars fan I've seen online.v if Urban acolyte hates it, it's over.

If what she said about the Knights of Ren is true then :manny: I'll take her word on this.
