What's in a name?

If Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams is to be believed, quite a lot.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the director divulged that it was no accident that the full names of main characters Finn and Rey (played by John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, respectively) had yet to be revealed. “I will only say about that that it is completely intentional that their last names aren’t public record,” said Abrams.

While the director stayed mum on revealing new details about Finn and Rey, he did share details about a new character - Teedo, seen riding a large armored creature called a "luggabeast" in photos released Wednesday. Teedo is played by Kiran Shah, an actor and stuntman who is a veteran of Star Wars films dating back to Return of the Jedi.

Abrams also dropped some details about General Hux, played by Domhnall Gleeson, one of the leaders of the First Order, the military organization formed in the wake of the Empire. According to the director, Hux is young for a general, and longs for an opportunity to show the First Order's military strength.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters December 18, 2015.

:jbhmm: Brehs, how do cac "Star Wars" fans feel about the 2 young leads in the movie being a Brotha & a PAWG?

Speaking on what I have seen on other forums (not this one):

Daisy Ridley: People are glad to see a "strong female protagonist " in a Star Wars film, "grrrl power" and all of that. People are utterly convinced that she is the main character, and probably Han or Luke's daughter (I don't doubt that point either.)

John Boyega:The mental gymnastics I have observed people making regarding this young man are absolutely astounding. I'll try to sum up the general opinion regarding him:

"He's not going to be a main character." :mjpls:
"He isn't a Jedi, he's just carrying the saber for Rey (Daisy Ridley)." :mjpls:

"The lightsaber is Rey's destiny. Finn (Boyega) is just in the story to bring it to her so her destiny can be realized." :mjpls:

"He isn't force sensitive. Just because he's using a lightsaber, doesn't mean he's going to be a Jedi. Han used one too." :mjpls:
"He's the Peeta of SW, Daisy is going to be Katniss." :mjpls:

"SW is only good when there's only one main character/one Jedi character. Boyega needs to be an everyman without powers." :mjpls:

"He looks kinda fat." :mjpls:

After reading the above, If you want to see what people are really trying to say, but are trying to be civil for the sake of their chosen forum, try four-c or Youtube comments.

They are legit terrified of this dude becoming a Jedi.

BTW-John Boyega competed with 3 other actors in the casting finals to get this role. 3 white actors. I can't help but wonder how different the tune of these "fans" would be if one those 3 got the role instead.

It's all but stated that Boyega is lead or co-lead at the very least (think Han in OT/Obi-Wan in PT). They just can't stand that. They could put up with Mace to an extent because he wasn't a character the narrative focused on. Their minds can't even process the concept of Boyega being a leading and very important character.

Not a black LEAD Jedi though and Mace only got to really swag out for about 1.5 movies before Vadar sonned him...

With THIS trilogy though Cacs are gonna have to come to the realization that Boyega is going to Swag out in full Jedi glory for THREE straight movies.

The girl (Rey) and the black dude (Finn) are the two main characters in the film and the whole Trilogy. But....

on multiple occasions throughout the film, Rey has to save Finn's ass, including the final lightsaber battle versus Kylo Ren, where Finn gets badly injured after holding his own for a while in the fight.

Comparing them to characters in the first trilogy, Rey is personality in the film is similar to Luke's and Finn's is similar to Han Solo's.

Which makes since considering the rumor that those are their respective fathers.

On the low, I've heard FINN is really the lead of the Franchise. And the first movie makes him look like co-lead, but afterwards it will transition. him to the forefront ala Luke Skywalker.

No I've heard similar things.

The truth is we won't know until December 18th when that opening scroll crawls across the big screen....

But my opinion is that Finn will be a Jedi and Rey will either be a Jedi also or some other form of important character. There have been too many hints of Finn's importance for him to NOT to be a PRIMARY focus of tie trilogy.

The first trailer, when the voiceover starts. "There's been an awakening....Have you felt it?" FIRST character you see is Finn..

The reports early on stressed that Boyega had been cast as the male LEAD. Not co-lead, co-star, sidekick, token nikka. LEAD

Early concept art (shown at SDCC) had Finn carrying the Lightsaber.

And now we've come to the official Poster. Finn wielding the fabled Blue Skywalker Lightsaber....

Finn is going to SWAG so hard it's going to bring Black people into the 22nd century. They'll re-elect Obama for a THIRD term. Black Wallstreet will resurrect. Say It Loud (I'm Black And I'm Proud) will be the new national anthem. Michael Jordan will be the NBA logo.
