Its important to remember that in the concept art that was made for this movie before casting started, Finn was drawn as a white guy. The character's ethnicity wasn't taken into consideration for the role.

Also, when George Lucas was putting a script together for the next sequels, before he sold the franchise to Disney, his version of the new trilogy had a black lead. Lucas is really big on diversity in his casting. (Married to a black woman and created the Red Tails movie about black pilots) After he sold to Disney and they decided to rewrite the films, he insisted that the main character still be black. Clearly Disney has kept that promise.

The truth is we won't know until December 18th when that opening scroll crawls across the big screen....

But my opinion is that Finn will be a Jedi and Rey will either be a Jedi also or some other form of important character. There have been too many hints of Finn's importance for him to NOT to be a PRIMARY focus of tie trilogy.


The first trailer, when the voiceover starts. "There's been an awakening....Have you felt it?" FIRST character you see is Finn..

The reports early on stressed that Boyega had been cast as the male LEAD. Not co-lead, co-star, sidekick, token nikka. LEAD

Early concept art (shown at SDCC) had Finn carrying the Lightsaber.

And now we've come to the official Poster. Finn wielding the fabled Blue Skywalker Lightsaber....


Finn is going to SWAG so hard it's going to bring Black people into the 22nd century. They'll re-elect Obama for a THIRD term. Black Wallstreet will resurrect. Say It Loud (I'm Black And I'm Proud) will be the new national anthem. Michael Jordan will be the NBA logo.

Boyega’s character has been endlessly speculated on, especially who he’s related to. Lando? Han Solo and his first wife, just introduced in the comic books? I asked him if anyone had gotten it right. “My mom was was close. My mom was close, but I’m not going to tell you what she said,” he laughed. “She was close, but the fact is, I’m not telling you what she said.”

Filming a movie like this, especially how secretive Star Wars was, we didn’t get the opportunities to have fans come to set, to interact with us. To know that they feel excited and that most of them are behind is brilliant. We’re going to try – or J.J. [Abrams] – it’s up to J.J. now. He’s in the editing booth. It’s up to him to make it happen and make sure this comes out great. And I’m sure he will.

They are legit terrified of this dude becoming a Jedi.

BTW-John Boyega competed with 3 other actors in the casting finals to get this role. 3 white actors. I can't help but wonder how different the tune of these "fans" would be if one those 3 got the role instead.
