That was before they began chasing him and after the snake bite from what I remember. It obviously exhibits that he is hallucinating as the other poster says

I just checked and he first started his monologue before the snake bite and of course it was after they were chasing him

I can forgive the one after the snake bite but not the first.

I thought that gold was being brought there for purchasing opium from the warlords/generals.

They mentioned that the gold was meant to pay local native Vietnamese people for helping them fight the VCs.

So it was meant for Vietnamese people, its been sitting buried on Vietnamese land for 4 decades, and now the 5 Bloods are going to sneak in under false pretenses and pay a shady French guy to basically launder it for them.

Regarding the characters playing themselves in the flashbacks; I caught early on that it was supposed to represent that they’re still living that reality even as old men. They haven’t been able to escape it.

Of course budget had a lot to do with it (Spike said it would’ve cost an extra $100 million to do the facial tech which would’ve meant this movie was never getting made), but it worked for me.
