Someone earlier pointed out there are films you don't have to see in order to know you won't like them, and I changed my position in light of that. But Spike isn't arguing that - he's arguing the film is offensive to his/our ancestors, and therefore will not see it. IIRC Jaimie Fox said Spike told him that he liked the script...so something is wrong here. The film is a blaxpoitation take on slavery with spaghetti western homages thrown in. How is that offensive to anyone? In fact, would Spike argue that blaxpoitation flicks from the 60s/70s were offensive to his people by trivializing the civil rights era?

i think people are forgetting that slavery in this movie is a backdrop and it's not the main focus of the movie. this movie isn't roots and this movie isn't about nat turner out to free all of his peoples. this movie is about django's revenge on people who wronged him and get his wife back. django is a slave approximately for 10mins then spends the rest of the movie killing criminals, the kkk, and slave owners all of them white i might add except for stephen he deserve it. is the word ****** used a lot? yes, but not guinness record book levels. i didn't find the movie offensive because quite frankly it's not a movie about slavery and i don't know why anybody who saw the trailers would even think this was a movie about slavery.
And Spike stated in an interview with Nelson George back in 1986 that he never watched blaxploitation flicks, either.

Birth of a Nation had a pro-racism message. Django is obviously the opposite so...really not comparable.
That being said, the movie is a revenge flick. And to do a revenge flick, you typically need a terrible monster of an antagonist to warrant the hero seeking and getting revenge. Hard to beat slavemasters for that role. I would compare it to something like I Spit on Your Grave or Last House on the Left. There are some people that are simply not interested in watching those films because they are particularly sensitive to the injustice that afflicts the hero and gives motive to carry out the revenge. But those films, like Django, don't handle the subject matter in a disrespectful way. Its never glorified or treated lightly. Still there are some that will be sensitive or simply not want to experience these scenes and they have the right to that.
Also, there's something to be said for the fact that, while there is the conventional white savior trope that enables Django to fulfill his quest, that arrangement is ultimately dropped and its when he's finally all on his own that he finally becomes fully "unchained.
