But I think another conclusion is there may simply be a growing appetite for cultured superheroes as opposed to the generic cookie-cutter vanilla-brand protagonist.

That’s part of why Spider-verse Miles (and T’Challa before him) seemed so refreshing and appealing to so many. Imo

Edit- and let me add to that a well written quality/emotional story also goes along way. Mixed with the right appetite and it can lead to an explosion of popularity
