BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Initial autopsy results are in for a 20-year-old Southern University student who was reportedly taking part in a fraternity ritual off campus when he collapsed and later died.

Members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity were reportedly carrying out a ritual where pledges stand in line when the student collapsed, a source familiar with the case said.

According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office, the cause and manner of death are currently undetermined and pending further study and testing.

The student, identified as Caleb Wilson, of Kenner, La., was a member of the Human Jukebox, the school’s marching band.

The Southern University Division of Student Affairs issued a statement putting an indefinite pause to all membership activities on campus including fraternities, sororities, and student clubs. This pause will remain in effect until further notice.

Southern University released the following statement:

Southern University and A&M College is aware of an off-campus incident that may have resulted in the death of student Caleb Wilson, a junior from New Orleans majoring in mechanical engineering. The campus community extends condolences to his family, classmates and loved ones.
Southern is cooperating fully with the Baton Rouge Police Department, which is in charge of the investigation. No further information is available at this time.
Counseling services are available for Southern University students, faculty and staff. Resources can be found at subr.edu/ucc.

Wilson’s father is a high-ranking member of law enforcement in the New Orleans area. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, where his father works, released a statement:

On behalf of Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to Deputy Corey Wilson and his family following the heartbreaking loss of his son Caleb. Dep. Wilson retired last year as a sergeant after serving 35 years with the JPSO. Dep. Wilson’s commitment to public service has continued with him currently serving in our Reserve Division. The JPSO stands in support of Dep. Wilson and his family. We ask that their privacy be respected as they mourn this unimaginable loss.

According Fox 8 News, 20-year-old Caleb Wilson, who was a student at Southern University and a member of the Human Jukebox band, was on line to pledge to the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. Early Thursday morning, Wilson was rushed to the hospital by a group of friends after he collapsed during an off-campus ritual where the pledges had to stand in a line. They were reportedly at a local park prior to rushing Wilson to the hospital.

Ooooooh yea that chapter is done.

RIP young man. Sad and unnecessary.

That chapter gonna be suspended forever.

If you still beating nikka like a slave in 2025 you'd think that would have everyone get a physical and check for any conditions ahead of time.

But we always try to get fed the old “none of the organizations do that” schpeil.

“My line didn’t do that.”
“I never heard of anything like that happening.”

Then you ask them what happened and they can never tell you. Imagine having to do something you’re not proud of to join an organization. Who even does that? You graduate and them people can’t even help you get jobs most of the time. I’ve seen it first hand.

So many of those D9 organization members are the most faux-elitist ,dishonest, and disingenuous people I’ve ever met.

They really think because they let people beat them up, run trains on them, make them eat dog food, drug them, bully them and have them do degrading things on camera that can later be used as blackmail, just to pay money to be in a group that’s supposedly elite, that they’re automatically going to have a better life or that they’re absolved from accountability for poor behavior.

They lie cheat and steal worse than they “regular black folks” they’re supposedly supposed to be helping, even with the lame community service outings they do once a year so they can post on social media.

RIP to the young man. He’d have been great without joining that organization and now he’s gone because of some clowns.

Can you imagine sending your smart, driven, beautiful son off to college only to end up having to bury him because he's around some pay for p*ssy losers stomping around in circles, doing goofy hand gestures, and chanting stupid shyt all day.

This is disgusting.

RIP to the young man, I truly feel for his family.

Man, I'm glad to see some sensible brothers on here.

Raising my sons to never need that type of approval.
