"Failure" by Lupe Fiasco made me not want to rap anymore.
I could listen to Jay, Nas, Rakim or whoever and inspire to spit something that nice.

This song literally destroyed all my aspirations to rap. It just wasn't' fair one person could be this nice with it and sound so effortless. I couldn't name another song like it, every bar as an allusion, metaphor or double/triple.

I don't even mess with his last couple albums like that, but the mixtapes and first two albums are epic.

A popular misconception is that Lupe always uses wordplay or lyrical acrobatics to throw off listeners.

If you listen to his albums (everybody at least listens to the the first 2) he's pretty straight forward with his messages.

And his storytelling and lyrical ability is unrivaled by anyone that debuted post 2000.

nas>lupe but i dont see a problem in saying lupe is more lyrical

The prollem is cats done built up this image of naS that is completely false of him being some top shelf lyricist when its simply not true. So if you take that away from him what do you have?

Some damn good stories, yes, but thats abkut it imo. I can imagine if a nikka tried to tell me Pac dont make that shyt real nikkaz feel, then proved jt. Itd be tough. Luckily Pac does make shyt for the realest nikkaz

gotta agree to disagree !!!
nas is a top shelf lyricist, proven over and over again for 20 plus years.
they may say he has no ear for beats, but they always praise the lyrics!!!
nas is just that nikka.
lyricism is his calling card!!!
no gimmicks!

Lupe is a better lyricist than Nas but Nas makes much better music IMO. Lupe probably has the worst ratio of talent:music in rap, next to Eminem, from "Lasers" onward.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
Well thats why I said Lu was more lyrical than Nas and Rakim.. I would put GZA in the same lane of elite lyricism as Lupe as far as degree if difficulty goes...

I agree with you about Lupe not being clear.. He's a show off with the word play and likes to make his rhymes puzzles to the point where it takes several listens to get one line..He definatly tries way too hard.. But that doesn't mean that he's not great at what he does imo...
And to me that means he's not technically BETTER lyrically..part of being a great lyricist is being able to paint a picture and have people be able to catch where ur going ultimately...nikkas STILL can't make up their minds about tracks like "Dumb It Down"...Nas is more poetic than anything anyway..Lupe is def the nicest rapper to emerge from the 2000s tho..period..

Nas' verse on "Bravehearted" is one big metaphor...and shyt.."Rewind" had me feeling that way about rapping after I first heard it..

in terms of technique lupe is better imo but nas has better content if that means anything.
