Around 100 British troops will fly into Estonia for military exercises as Britain and its Nato allies try to reassure the Baltic states they will be protected against Russian aggression.

The soldiers arrive a day after four RAF Typhoon fighter jets began patrolling the Baltic skies against Russian incursions, in a Nato air defence mission that has trebled in size since the Ukraine crisis began.

The troops of 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment will join Estonian troops for three weeks of war games amid increasing alarm in Nato’s eastern members over events in eastern Ukraine.

Commanders said the exercise, called Spring Storm, had been long planned, but it comes as politicians and defence chiefs debate how to respond to Russian moves in Ukraine.

Many in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia fear Moscow will follow recent efforts to destabilise eastern Ukraine with a similar campaign against them.

America has already sent around 600 soldiers to the Baltic and to Poland on exercises and they are expected to stay in the region for the rest of the year.

Philip Hammond, Defence Secretary, will accompany the soldiers as they fly to Amari airbase and he will be met by the Estonian defence minister.

The British troops, which include the battalion’s tactical headquarters and Burma company, served alongside Estonian troops in Afghanistan’s Helmand province.

A company of Estonian scouts was commanded by the regiment’s 2nd battalion in the province’s Nad-e Ali.

Lt Col George Maund, commanding officer of 1 Lancs, said: “The Battalion is delighted to be taking part in this important exercise and looking forward to building on the excellent relationship we have formed with Estonian Forces on operations in Afghanistan.

“This exercise gives my soldiers an excellent opportunity to develop joint operating skills with a long-standing and valued Nato partner and they are looking forward to the experience immensely”.

Mr Hammond said: “This exercise is about maintaining our close working relationships with our key allies in Eastern Europe and particularly the Estonian army with whom we enjoy a proud history of operating together, most recently in Afghanistan.”

Canada sending soldiers for military exercises in Poland

Text:
"They will conduct training in parachuting, airborne operations and infantry skills alongside Polish and American counterparts in this United States-led exercise with a view to enhancing Alliance interoperability and readiness," the prime minister's office said in the statement.

Canada has also diverted frigate HMCS Regina, which is currently on counter-terrorism and anti-piracy patrols in the Arabian Sea, to help NATO's efforts to send a message of resolve to Russia.

Harper did not say where the ship is headed, but NATO announced earlier this month it was beefing up maritime patrols in both the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean.

Six Canadian CF-18 fighter jets left their base in Bagotville, Que., this week, headed for an air base in Romania, and eventual patrols along that country's border with Ukraine -- and possibly over the Black Sea.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Canada's actions are meant to send a "very loud, clear and tangible message" to Russia.

"Until Russia clearly demonstrates its respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity we will continue to work with our allies and our partners to further isolate Russia economically and politically," Baird said at a news conference in Ottawa.

There has been a "concerning" increase in the last day or two in violent actions in eastern Ukraine, Baird said, calling Putin a hypocrite for asking Ukraine to remove troops from parts of the country.

"Just imagine if a foreign power massed troops outside this department building, sent in thugs to start smashing the windows, then told us to withdraw our security guards," Baird said. "This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable in the 21st century."

The federal government also said this week that a Canadian military officer is heading an international arms-control verification team investigating "unusual military activity" in Ukraine, but the inspections won't include the disputed Crimea region, which was annexed by Russia.

National Defence has also announced that a team of navy clearance divers would deploy next month for an exercise in Latvia, one of the Baltic states under threat.

Harper's announcement Friday came as U.S. President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a joint news conference that further sanctions against Russia would be unavoidable if it disrupts a presidential election in Ukraine scheduled for May 25.

Both leaders made it clear that the next step would be to order sanctions on separate parts of the Russian economy or military -- on energy or arms for example -- but neither leader specified precisely what was being considered.

Pro-Russia forces shot down two Ukrainian helicopters Friday and Ukraine reported many rebels dead and wounded as the interim government in Kyiv launched its first major offensive against an insurgency that has seized government buildings across the east.

Horlivka, Ukraine (CBS DC) – A CBS News crew was held for several hours by pro-Russian militants in eastern Ukraine after they were blindfolded and detained at a checkpoint near the city of Horlivka.

“We were blindfolded with cloth and masking tape really quite tightly around our heads so we couldn’t see anything at all,” Correspondent Clarissa Ward told “CBS This Morning” on Friday, over the phone not long after they were released.

She added that the captors were “quite rough and sharp” with her producer Erin Lyall, two male CBS News employees and herself.

“Stopped and diverted at Slovyansk checkpoint by pro-Russian activists. They’re waiting for order- send us to prison or let us proceed,” Ward tweeted. Ward tweeted that one member of the crew “was beaten” but that they were “all ok,” after taking to Twitter around 7 a.m. ET to announce that they’d “been released.”

She told CBS News that there was “a lot of strong anti-American rhetoric” from the pro-Russians, noting that one of the militants said, “if Obama was smart he wouldn’t be supporting Kiev.”

Soon after, a senior commander of the militant forces arrived and ordered the journalists to be released.

Ward told CBS News that the pro-Russian militants separated the male crew members from the women and interrogated them about their nationalities and families while they remained blindfolded. As a veteran foreign correspondent, Ward said that questions like that make “you start to feel a pit in your stomach.”

Ward said that the pro-Russian militants were “emotional” as the Ukrainian military continues its advance on Slavyansk.

Russians disperse Crimean Tatars, Jemilev entry blocked
jemilev.jpg

Russian Special Forces fired into the air to disperse thousands of Crimean Tatars who had gathered at the Herson Armansk border crossing to greet leader Mustafa Jemilev with chants of 'Allahu Akbar'.
World Bulletin / News Desk

Crimean Tatar leader Mustafa Jemilev is attempting for the second day to enter his homeland after his entry to Crimea was denied on Friday due to the local Russian authorities barring him.

Jemilev, who attempted to fly to Crimea's Akmescit (Simferopol) airport from Moscow on Friday, was told to go back to the Ukrainian capital Kiev where he serves as an MP in the Ukrainian parliament. On Saturday, he attempted to enter his homeland via a border crossing.

According to Qirim News Agency, up to 1,000 cars carrying Crimean Tatars went to go greet Jemilev at the border, but were intercepted by 40 teams of Russian Special Forces. Emotional scenes followed when the Russian authorities once again forbid entry to the Crimean Tatar leader.

The thousands of Crimean Tatars who had come to greet their leader at the Herson Armansk border crossing began to cry out 'Allahu Akbar' (God is Great) chants as the Russians cut off their road. Crimean Tatar Mejlis (Parliament) head Refat Chubarov, who was also on the scene, called on his people to stand back in order to avoid bloodshed.

Russian Crimean Prime Minister Sergey Aksyonov said that the 70-year-old Jemilev had been banned from Crimea because he threatens of destabilize the region, claiming that Jemilev was being backed by Western spy agencies.

Aksyonov said that Jemilev was directing his people in the wrong way and warned that Jemilev would be responsible for the consequences that may arise from his actions.

Crimean Tatars are the native Turkic-speaking Muslim population of Crimea, who make up 13% of the population. They are largely displaced by ethnic Russians after they were exiled by former Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in 1944. After the collapse of Soviet Russia, many chose to return.
