One day after Ukraine's acting President Oleksandr Turchynov conceded defeat in the East, the city of Donetsk appears to have totally succumbed to armed separatists.

Turchynov admitted as much on Wednesday saying that “it is hard to accept but it’s the truth. The majority of law enforcers in the east are incapable of performing their duties."

The BBC is reporting that hundreds of men have swarmed the Donetsk prosecutor's office and are fending off riot police, in rather demeaning ways:

Russia still denies stirring unrest in east Ukraine, where pro-Russia separatists have been occupying government buildings in different cities for several weeks.

Still, even before the unrest broke out in Donetsk today, Ukrainian officials said they will eject a Russian military attaché from the country for engaging in "intelligence activities."

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry hasn't yet named the individual, but said he was taken into custody on Wednesday and has been ordered to leave the country.

The Ministry issued a statement on the incident, saying "the military-naval attaché of the embassy of the Russian Federation in Ukraine is declared persona non grata in connection with his actions, which are not in accordance with his diplomatic status."

The title should read, "We have lost the east to the people of Ukraine who do not care for the illegal government in Kiev."

Ukraine crisis
Many pro-Russia rebels have been killed, injured and arrested in the Ukrainian government offensive in the eastern city of Sloviansk, acting President Oleksandr Turchynov has said.

In a statement, he said the operation in the rebel-held city was not going as quickly as hoped.

Rebels have shot down two Ukrainian army helicopters, killing a pilot and a serviceman. Seven have been injured.

The UN Security Council is meeting in emergency session at Russia's request.

Moscow has said the use of the Ukrainian army against its own people is "leading Ukraine to catastrophe".

The situation in Sloviansk remains unclear.

I am standing at a bridge where there is a stand-off going on between the Ukrainian armed forces and a large group of pro-Russian locals.

I can see about 300 people waving Russian flags, singing and chanting - as if they are daring the military to go closer.

A heavy downpour of rain and a lightning storm have pushed people back a little bit. But it is a very tense situation here.

At the moment the troops are standing around in the field and the protesters are keeping to their part of the bridge. It is difficult tell in which direction this will go. The atmosphere in a place like this can change very quickly.

Mr Turchynov said the fight against rebel forces was "greatly complicated" by the fact that the conflict in eastern Ukraine was taking place in population centres.

He accused pro-Russian forces of hiding behind civilians and hostages.

All pro-Russian checkpoints around the city had been captured, Mr Turchynov added, though separatists have spoken of several still being under their control.

Local people could be seen standing in front of Ukrainian tanks, according to Paul Ronzheimer, a reporter with Germany's Bild newspaper in the city.

Many told the soldiers to retreat, exclaiming "shoot us, we are separatists as well, just because we want to belong to Russia, shoot us", Mr Ronzheimer said.

Earlier, Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said the "active phase" of the operation in the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk region began at 04:30 local time (02:30 GMT).

To the south, there have been clashes in the coastal city of Odessa between pro-Russian protesters and supporters of the Kiev government.

At least three people have been killed amid reports of gunfire.

The West continues to accuse Moscow of provoking the unrest in eastern Ukraine, something Russia denies.

US President Barack Obama, at a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the White House, warned of further sanctions against Russia if it did not "change course".

He said the idea that the unrest was caused by a "spontaneous uprising" was "belied" by the militants' use of missiles.

On the seven Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe observers detained in Sloviansk by pro-Russian activists, Mr Obama said both leaders were "united in their outrage" about their treatment.

Elsewhere in eastern Ukraine:

  • Unknown attackers have seized a local railway control centre near Donetsk, disrupting train movement
  • Pro-Russian rebels have left the city council office and TV centre in the eastern Luhansk region

Eastern Ukraine has a large Russian-speaking population. It was a stronghold for President Viktor Yanukovych before he was overthrown by pro-Western protesters in February.

Russia then annexed the Crimean peninsula - part of Ukraine but with a Russian-speaking majority - in a move that provoked international outrage.

The crisis has plunged East-West relations to their lowest point since the Cold War ended in the early 1990s.

Pro-Russian forces in Slovyansk have shot down two Ukrainian helicopter gunships after Kiev launched an operation against the separatist stronghold that was condemned by Russia.

Ukraine's Defence Ministry said on Friday "unknown groups" had shot down two Mi-24s, while an Mi-8 transport helicopter was also damaged. The SBU security service earlier said one pilot was killed and another captured.

The SBU said man-portable missiles were used against one helicopter - proof that "trained, highly qualified foreign military specialists" were operating in the area "and not local civilians, as the Russian government says, armed only with guns taken from hunting stores".

Ukraine's military said later on Friday that they had arrested four separatists suspected of involvement in the downing of helicopter at a checkpoint outside Slovyansk shortly after a dawn attack.

Arsen Avakov, Ukrainian interior minister, said on his Facebook page that troops had taken control of nine checkpoints around Slovyansk despite heavy resistance. He blamed "terrorists" for the army's losses.

Vyacheslav Ponomarev, Slovyansk's separatist-appointed mayor, was quoted by Russia's Interfax agency as saying one pilot was taken hostage.

Russian TV, available in Donetsk and parts of eastern Ukraine, broadcast footage of the captured pilot, who was injured.

Russia has warned Ukraine it must not launch attacks on Ukrainian civilians, who it says have legitimate concerns. Kiev says the separatists are being boosted by Russian soldiers.

Slovyansk has become a separatist stronghold, and there have been regular clashes between pro-Russians and Ukrainian troops. Last week, Ukraine sent troops to dismantle several roadblocks but withdrew forces soon after.

Slovyansk's separatists have held seven European inspectors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe for a week. They had been sent as part of a deal world powers struck in Geneva to ease tensions in Ukraine.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Friday said the "punitive operation" in Slovyansk had destroyed any hope of keeping the deal alive.

Russia had sent an envoy to southeast Ukraine to negotiate the realease of the monitors, Peskov said.

Horlivka, Ukraine (CBS DC) – A CBS News crew was held for several hours by pro-Russian militants in eastern Ukraine after they were blindfolded and detained at a checkpoint near the city of Horlivka.

“We were blindfolded with cloth and masking tape really quite tightly around our heads so we couldn’t see anything at all,” Correspondent Clarissa Ward told “CBS This Morning” on Friday, over the phone not long after they were released.

She added that the captors were “quite rough and sharp” with her producer Erin Lyall, two male CBS News employees and herself.

“Stopped and diverted at Slovyansk checkpoint by pro-Russian activists. They’re waiting for order- send us to prison or let us proceed,” Ward tweeted. Ward tweeted that one member of the crew “was beaten” but that they were “all ok,” after taking to Twitter around 7 a.m. ET to announce that they’d “been released.”

She told CBS News that there was “a lot of strong anti-American rhetoric” from the pro-Russians, noting that one of the militants said, “if Obama was smart he wouldn’t be supporting Kiev.”

Soon after, a senior commander of the militant forces arrived and ordered the journalists to be released.

Ward told CBS News that the pro-Russian militants separated the male crew members from the women and interrogated them about their nationalities and families while they remained blindfolded. As a veteran foreign correspondent, Ward said that questions like that make “you start to feel a pit in your stomach.”

Ward said that the pro-Russian militants were “emotional” as the Ukrainian military continues its advance on Slavyansk.
