When they say this people always jump to mascot games and/or platformers. There will never be a franchise as big for as long as mario in that genre, there just won’t be.
You can’t out nintendo, nintendo.
They have IP already with longevity like Gran Turismo, GoW, R&C, now TLOU, etc. and they all still have room for growth, with their multiplayer titles, movies/tv, etc.
If Twisted Metal is released it will be sonys oldest franchise at 30 years, with GT shortly approaching. They won’t be selling 50m copies but thats not the only benefit to having long term IP. Thats why sonys been digging in the crates of old IP to bring back, they want older people interested in the console and younger people to get into the stuff the older generation loves, like nintendo do with mario and pokemon
that's the very point of the thread tho. If Sony drop a new console what's the first IP you thinking of to drop with that console? or what IP you think gonna carry out and do cross market promoting/production? The IPs do well for sure, but when someone say Sony I only think of Sony the company.
Mario and Sonic have had RPGs, fighting games, racing games, tactic games so on and so forth. this isn't about a genre, it's more so about a "lovable IP"
the people in charge at sony are not fun software creatives like miyamoto or naka. any mascot the hardware tech people or marketing people come up with will be missing that spark - just look at polygon man, LOL. i consider masterchief to be just barely serviceable as a mascot. you dont even really see him put to good use in marketing now. his status as mascot is very forced.
he said loveable ip. there is nothing lovable about narrative, gameplay mechanics, or technology. it's the characters.Again, they aren’t talking about mascots

if he were cartoonish, i actually think he would come pretty close to achieving that status for sony. come to think of it, i think if they put more emphasis on sly cooper and drew him to look "cuter", that could have worked.Nathan drake is loveable,
Sony CEO
Doesn't even know what they have. lol
Jak and Daxter
Sly Cooper
Ratchet and Clank
Squenix wanted to prep itself for a Sony purchase and they refused, if they di they would have
Hell you want older, you have all those Final Fantasy characters that people have begged about but that they ignore.
You have Chrono Trigger
shyt has to hit sony fans hard to see how ignorant their CEO is of his own company
Square enix had reported to prep for a sale, the management made a offer to Sony to buy them and Sony refused. You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about
Who refused a merger? what does Chrono trigger of all things even have to do with this conversation

Halo has been around for 22 years. Is now considered in a downturn in terms of IP popularity and it was still able to drop a bad show and beat some of the most talked about TV shows of last year.halo show did decent numbers for Paramount +, the ashiest streaming service out
The Last of Us did record numbers on HBO, ad the games are selling like crazy. Sony don’t have an IP problem, they are talking about and taking steps towards sustainability of IP

That’s the type of sustainability sony is looking for
