the TV and/or console will upscale to it's native resolution
just like a 1080p game that's reconstructed to 1440p, and then checkerboarded to 2160p

This would be an excellent point if SD tvs were more prevalent than HD tvs at the time.
Unlike today where almost half, if not more, the tvs in service are still mostly HDTV and not UHD sets.
