I want to start off by saying that the term "failure" is relative. A great example is the new Avatar 2 movie directed by James Cameron hitting theaters in 2016. With the first Avatar doing well over 2 billion in revenue, it's safe to say that anything less then a 2 billion revenue stream will be seen as a failure. But that is relative to the Avatar series. Let's take a look at the new Comic Book movies hitting theaters soon and take a look at what I feel is the "new definition" of comic book failure.

Another example is the Avengers 2 movie. That movie should easily pull in 1 billion based off of prior projects. If the movie made 800 million, it would still be a financial success, but it can still be considered a failure for its missing of 200 million.

A good real example of a comic book series failure has been the Amazing Spider-Man series. with a budget of 480 million through 2 movies, the film series has grossed 1.45 billion. Sounds great until you consider that the original Spider-Man series with Tobey McGuire thru 2 movies had a budget of 340 million and grossed 1.6 billion (NOT adjusted for inflation). This is a direct correlation to better movies, plot, actors, and villains. Will The Amazing Spider-man 3 make a nice amount of money...sure, but its failure is easily recognizable.

That post is awful because in real life, these are the fifth and sixth movies in the spiderman FRANCHISE and the fifth and sixth movies in that series grossed 1.45 billion...thats stunningly good considering the 1st and 4th retold the same story. Its a testament to the draw that is spiderman.
