Never had a desire to watch it, looks like some Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings stuff. Never watched any of those either.
But it is the rage....so what makes it such?
The show was originally pitched as a fantasy show for people that don't like fantasy. And it was even pitched to HBO as the Sopranos in Medieval Europe.
It's really closer to a mafia story than it is to a show about dragons. That's why in the main GOT thread, people form sets and rep their favorite house (or mobb family). The history of the world is rich, and the characters are complex, very little "good guys", and you find out quickly that the good guys that you do have don't always win...in fact they hardly ever win. That is originally what hooked people in season 1, how anyone could die.
The focus is more on family drama, far reaching political choices, sex, worldbuilding and deconstructing the tropes of fantasy rather than being a fantasy. At least in the first four seasons.
Most of the people I know that watch it, including a bro in law who hardcore hates fantasy, don't fukk with Harry potter or Lord of the Rings or Star Wars. It's one of those shows that you don't have to be a genre fan to like. There is a big joke in the film Lucky Logan where everyone in the prison, black, white, mexican, asian, are all begging for the warden to put more game of throne books in the library. And that's real shyt for how the makeup of this show is now. It ain't just former Dungeons and Dragon players.
