Some rumblings that Barnett and Snyder could be out. Looks Hampton is definitely out and Kelly could move to an off the field role
FSU Coaching Insider: Changes Expected After 2018 Season
Last year at this time, the Florida State football program was on the brink of a major coaching change. Jimbo Fisher was on his way to Texas A&M and the search for a new head coach was about to begin. Willie Taggart would eventually be hired, and he would spend the next six weeks assembling his coaching staff, all while salvaging FSU’s 2018 recruiting class at the same time.
Taggart is one game away from completing his first regular season as the Seminoles head coach, and at the end of the year, we could see some movement among his coaching staff.
After speaking with several sources close to the program, it’s reasonable to expect some turnover or changes with his coaching staff. It’s been a difficult season for FSU, they currently sit with only five wins and need to beat their rival Florida this weekend to become bowl eligible.
— I’m hearing the staff has battled through adversity losing a lot this season, and there has been some dissension among the staff. This isn’t uncommon with a team that’s struggling. Most of the disagreements I’ve heard about surround recruiting, whether it be who to offer or what geographical region should be recruited. The first year of a coaching staff has some aspects of ‘trial-and-error’ involved with it ,and this staff is experiencing that when it comes to recruiting.
— After the season concludes, I’m told Willie Taggart plans to sit down with each coach for an in-depth discussion on the season, their coaching performance and the future of what’s next for each coach. Based on what I’m hearing, his upcoming discussion with defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett is one to keep an eye on. There have been some reasons to believe Barnett’s scheme and philosophy don’t match with what Taggart wants to do. Although recently Barnett has shown the ability to adapt and change. He moved from he sidelines to the press box for the last two weeks and his defense was noticeably simpler this past weekend against Boston College, which resulted in FSU’s first win in four weeks.
I’m not expecting Barnett to leave at this point, he is the highest paid assistant coach on the staff at $980,000 per year. He signed a two-year contract when he arrived at FSU and would be owed nearly $2 million if he was fired. But if there is a scenario where Barnett does not return to FSU next year, there’s a good chance defensive ends coach Mark Snyder could be gone as well. Snyder coached with Barnett the last three seasons at Michigan State and was Barnett’s one hire, given to him by Taggart. As I said, the upcoming discussion with Barnett and Taggart is worth keeping an eye on.
— I’ve spoken with several sources within the FSU program and throughout coaching circles that believe FSU will go in another direction at special teams. Alonzo Hampton’s unit has underperformed all season, and he’s the most likely to go if/when there are changes made after the season.
— The possibility of a coach or two being reassigned to an off-field job is also something I’m hearing. Wide receiver coach David Kelly has been Taggart’s off field recruiting coordinator for the past three years, two at USF and one at Oregon. He was given an on-field job this season, but there’s talk that he’d be more valuable to the program if he was in charge of FSU’s recruiting strategy and building the culture in a full-time role.
We don’t expect any changes to the coaching staff until FSU’s season is over. There might not be any movement until after FSU’s 2019 early signing class is inked on December 19. We’ll update you with any new developments as they become available.
