Cell wasn't that much stronger than the z teams strongest. Android 16 was able to grab and hold him alone for a while. Trunks and Goku could of beat cell, no reason all of them couldn't do it easily.

Cell powered up TWICE after his fight with Goku. He had already stomped Trunks into dust and he was barely trying. Trunks was barely breaking even with Cell Jrs and you think he had a chance to hurt Cell?
Cell was toying with Goku. Holding Cell means nothing because you have to destroy him on a Celluar level. Cell took a Kamhameha from SSJ2 Gohan and was still alive. What the Fukk is Trunks gonna do?

I stopped reading after you said he stomped trunks cause that never happened. Trunks couldnt initially beat cell cause he was too slow. He had the strength. Cell beamed him after he came back stronger due to saiyan cells. There wouldn't be any power ups if they ganged him the first time.
