Even if by some miracle the Russians hadn't finished him the only other way it coulda gone is if the Wise Men got him in the end... They come back and kill him to keep Alonzo from rollin over on them since he was now a liability that point

Alonzo's plan worked perfectly. If it weren't for the random encounter they had with Smiley's niece earlier in the day Alonzo would have successfully
paid off the Russians and Jake would have lost half his face in the bathtub.
Alonzo's mistake though was not killing Jake on the roof after they fought. I don't know wtf he was thinking with that one.

I didn't know Roger was a former cop. 
I know he said Alonzo had a "silly rookie look" back in the day, but I just took that as him being an old school drug dealer who was obviously around for a long time who might have met Alonzo the same way Jake did. None of the three wiseguys or the other cops on Alonzo's team alluded to him being a former cop either.
