Marriage is a system we created. We could go back to communal lifestyles, but thats just not gonna happen. People aren't that radical. You have to work with what you have.

But legally, if you start removing mates from the pool via the obstacles and benefits of marriage, then you remove that many more viable mates from the dating pool who people can engage with.

That seeds resentment.

Imagine a small town of 50,000 people of adult/dating age.

If even 5% of the city gets into polygamous union, you remove an additional 2,500 people out of the dating pool who could have been the other mates options.

Again, this is more than just sex. Relationships are a strong symbol of identity and when you remove that, people go crazy.

Its literally trying to keep society together.

I'm cool with gay marriage. But gay polygamy causes the same problems because you're removing mates from the pool.

Just because it's legal? There is nothing stopping any of that from happening right now and there would be nothing compelling people to do anything different if it was legal. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm saying that's just how it is and there wouldn't be much change if polygamy was legal.
