It’s really not that bad. I did comEng, so my institution made us do both electrical eng coursework and the full cs coursework. From what I saw, the cs tracks only made you go until calc 2 or calc 3. Additionally, differentials/linear algebra were optional for them at my institution. Cs didn’t require physics 2 either.

‘How far have you gotten in math already, @cjt11203 ? Simply buying the book for your next class and reviewing it prior to enrolling in the course can work wonders for your higher lvl math scores. It just takes self-motivation. Sadly, I found out really late that by the time you reach calc2, you won’t be able to keep up in real time with the course unless you live, breath, and dream math theorems.:whew:

‘There was a period in there when I literally went to sleep at night and dreamed I was integrating 3D sine functions.:to::snoop::mjcry:.

As a caveat, I will say that if you are a black man, a cs degree is irrefutable proof that you can do what you claim. Without the credential, a white employer or contract holder will almost certainly pick the white dude from the 6mth program over you.

From what I’ve seen, those boot camps seem to really boost white folks into the industry. The only exception may be if you live in ATL, Charlotte, or Houston.:hubie:

Well this came way too late for me, six months in a bootcamp :mjlol:

So I can speak on Woz U, which is an online bootcamp.

I wanted to do in person but COVID happened.

I'll be done in August, I'll have a better idea of it.

Right now, Im not really a fan of how they do things, it took a long time before I was let off the leash a little to do projects. I have a mentor I can message on Slack when I need help.

But I would have preferred a classroom with my peers. Some Bootcamps will do live video classes, instead of mostly self-studying on deadlines kinda deal Woz-U is.

I'm sure a bunch on dudes here look down on them, I've heard mixed results depending on which bootcamp you choose.

I'm sure a CS degree will always win over them, but I didn't have the money for college (made too much for the Pell grant last year:mjcry:)

No matter what path you choose, understand that you need to put in 20hrs MINIMUM per week.

I fukked up one course and tried to study for an IT cert at the same time. I was lost by the final project and bombed it something serious.

That is my two cents, maybe it'll be a waste of money, since Full stack web dev is saturated, but who knows :yeshrug:.

I'll update the thread with my woes later :russ:

Good luck broski.

EDIT: I have six years in IT so maybe my experience will be different, just an FYI.

Appreciate the feedback breh.

COVID really fukking things up, I feel like I'll only do really well actually being around my peers organically sharing ideas, looking at each others code:mjcry:. I hate zoom classes with a passion:hhh:

(and the problem with a CS degree is then I'll actually have to do real math :to:)

Yea, I wanted the same experience man, believe me. I learn the best that way, you can bounce the energy off of each other better. Then everyone wins in some way.

So, even after I graduate from this (I do get a "degree", some kind of tech degree which is accredited :ehh:)

I'm going back to school anyway for a four year degree. Which my future employer will pay for :mjlit:

I'll be honest, I might go for the Comp Sci degree, not because it will make me competitive but to prove to myself that my math teachers back in school can kiss my ass :wow:

Between Khan Academy and my friend who has a dual bachelors in math and physics, hopefully I'll be ok :lupe:

Starting from Algebra 1 though :bryan:

Pray for me brehs :francis:

Wow. I honestly thought that it would have been the other way around. I thought big companies were leading the way on best practices, especially since they have such massive databases, etc. that it would make it hard for new developers to manage, especially when they're coming into it blind, and can't tell right off what's happening. Man, if I had to work on legacy stuff that had no comments and vague documentation, I'd be complaining too :skip:

I can imagine how that would suck up your motivation. You're expending all your brainpower just trying to figure out what the hell is going on at your job :pachaha:

My new manager told me all the stories, alot of folks will pull shyt from Github and slap shyt together.

Something in the code triggers an alarm on the server and the whole app goes dead for hours.:russ:

Brothers how often does someone go from programming or software development to cyber security?

Reason I'm asking is because the way Biden is talking today, it sounds like the government is finally ready to invest in cyber security. Wondering how easy (or hard) it would be for me to cross into that industry from coding and programming.

@Afro @Obreh Winfrey

I can't say I know anyone personally that has made the cross, but securing programs BEFORE they launch is a higher priority now.

How to Become a Security Software Developer | Requirements for Security Software Developer Jobs

You would be valuable either way, but don't put the "cart before the horse" so to speak. Learn your software dev foundations, gain your skills there, then pivot to whatever you want.

My two cents :yeshrug:

Currently on this JavaScript journey and I try to learn little things to keep myself inspired. I discovered tonight that the Netflix frontend was built using JavaScript. :wow:

The overwhelming majority of web front ends use a JavaScript framework. Just the tip of the iceberg.
