I disagree, they can cater to the south all they want its clear that it doesn't win them elections. Florida and the Midwest have always been key to winning the presidency and while FL has its share of rednecks, the midwest as a whole is more progressive than that. MI, OH, WI, PA. These are the keys to the presidency and it also happens to be where the GOP has been assaulting the unions the most. If the GOP can win back the Midwest they can win back the White House. It just so happens that these people in these states aren't usually the ones to ascribe to the media trickery...they are more simple than that, and i don't mean that insultingly, I'm from the midwest. They look at shyt in terms of how does electing you or your party affect my job...the shyt is cultural here.
I agree the South won't win them elections.

They may have lost MI for good. 6 times and counting. OH will always be an uphill battle for them. Illinois is always Democratic. What you're saying will take a huge change in GOP ideology (all versions) to win these states. Obama won EVERY state in that region except one.

NTM, you said the GOP has assaulted the Unions. That's something the Midwest won't forget about soon. Plus overall the GOP will ignorantly play ideology politics.. and the Democrats will continue to play get in where the votes fit in politics (we love gays, Mexicans, woman, baby killers, welfare, atheist, Muslims, and Asians- plus we will pretend to not pander to the rich.

As long as they are strong fiscally with libertarian leaning views but can win over evangelicals by believing what they believe but calling them state issues...social issues for president gets too much attention when they don't affect it.

Can't be moderate because then there will be no contrast

LOL. The bolded makes no sense. Want to further that? BTW, how can republicans promote "fiscally libertarian leaning views", when they are basically a subsidiary of corporate America? Or do libertarian views of non-existent govt. intervention only apply to the minority and poor?
