john mccain was right, the extremists are going to destroy their party.

when you really look at it McCain wasn't a bad statesman, he just had no presence. And Palin ruined him.

Social Conservatism is out the door, as the country becomes more diverse and tolerant and educated its bound to happen. I was watching Bill Maher and Andrew Sullivan (who i usually despise) said something very true.

he stated "The next GOP candidate that will have success will the the one who says Rush Limbaugh does NOT speak for the Republican Party."

I think that resonates. For the past 5 or so years, the conservative media has taken a choke hold on the GOP, fragmenting it between the fiscal and the social conservatives. In that process, confusing the independents, alienating the minority and women votes and not understanding that misinformation can NEVER prevail in a time where the "truth" is free and readily available.

I'm not a Democrat, i very much so think that socialism and command economies don't work. BUT i do think that administrative bodies and goverments are some what responsible for the well being and best interests of their electorate. The GOP fails to realize that middle aged, white men are no longer the majority of the electorate...and haven't been for ooohh i dont know 70 or 80 years....:childplease:

Ill tell you whose gonna win. The moderates (why the quotations?) and the American people.

The extremists torpedoed McCain in 08, and Romney "the severe conservative" cowered to them again this time to his own peril. Enough is enough, and thank God people are beginning to wake the fukk up.

This right here.
The "nuts" have the loudest voice because CRAZY will always sound louder. What they don't have are the numbers. WHen you get right down to it the extreme nuts are "tooth pick" from this scene:
Particularly at 1:45. That has been the republican party for the last few years up until the "fuk somebody in they ass"

We hit that point on this election... The moderates are starting to realize toothpick been running the show...

I was talking with a conservative breh I've been good friends with here over lunch

A lot of us are too young to remember but apparently the Dems were in worse shape in the 70s/80s. I am talking about, 1 state going to a Democrat (for some stupid reasont hey chose blue for Republicans and red for Dems) (1972)

pe1972.png

Then the next election (1976) a Democrat took it (in the South!!!!!!!!)

pe1976.png

Then the next election (1980) it swung way back

pe1980.png

PEople were talking about the Dems being over then, look at them now

Pendulum swings based on what people are worried about and how that matches party ideals. Dems go for soft stuff that can really only be addressed during times of prosperity, GOP plays on fear (Cold War, high crime of the 70s, Al Qaeda, Fear Of The Black Man's Penis). We are entering into what looks like a stretch of economic pain... that conservative horseshyt could make a legit resurgence. The way dude broke it down was :ohlawd: :damn:

They are fukked up for now esp w/that hateful rhetoric... but again Reagan won while scapegoating "welfare queens". Dont bet against American fear and racism, you will always lose :merchant:

No candidate will ever say this anti Limbaugh anti-social conservative sh1t and win the nomination for the GOP due to the fact that they need to win the southern states. Regardless of what the politicians on TV or in MI or OH say, the GOP needs to appeal to the redneck, liberal hating, and bible thumping voters in order to even be competitive.

So they will continue to put up candidates that- even if you want to side with them on some social issues, or business issues, or gun rights- you just can't vote for them due to their position on foreign policy, immigration, trickle down and social programs.

Nothings going to make middle aged white men think any differently, they will forget all this sh1t in two years because they will kill the congressional elections and completely forget all this sh1t in four years when Obama is out.

Which side will be the more prominent face of the GOP say by 2016? Will they still insist on placating all the nuts in their base, or will they start to join the rest of us in sanity and modernity?

Fault lines are being drawn. Today Bobby Jindal said the GOP needs to stop being the "stupid party." :bustback: I think every Republican strategist and operative knows this to be true, but the problem is their base and punditry (who wield way too much power) are out of control. They can't seem to stop repelling everyone else and primarying Repub candidates with lunatics and winning, only to lose the general election.

Sociological and political continental drift theory. Eventually the repub party will move away from its extremism, but right now they are too closely joined w/ the successful southern strategy.

The elements that we consider extremism, have really been the centerpiece of the party --- republicans have understood anti-govt messaging in racial terms, its just that a Black president has excited these leanings, and the messaging has become less codified and more defiant and loud.

Republicans are too intellectually lazy to craft inclusive messages, because that would require thoughtfulness, research, outreach, tolerance, etc...social and intellectual approaches that run counter to the ideals which center the party.

What I anticipate is a divide and conquer strategy, posed as outreach. "Hey _____ do you want to be like the mooching, lazy, no-account members of your race who vote democrat? Or do you want to come to the pro-business, individually-minded, constitutionally-adhering side?" This will allow them to have their cake and eat it too, while pretending like they are evolving as a party.

The flaw in this is that the demographics of the country weren't shifting so rapidly and the youth was not making up as large of a percentage of the electorate. This isn't about swaying the minds of the same people that it used to be. The Republicans still have those people, the Democratic coalition is made up of the people whose issues that Republicans didn't care about

Thus, it would necessarily take an ideological shift to gain some of that back, on social issues at least.

As long as they are strong fiscally with libertarian leaning views but can win over evangelicals by believing what they believe but calling them state issues...social issues for president gets too much attention when they don't affect it.

Can't be moderate because then there will be no contrast

I disagree, they can cater to the south all they want its clear that it doesn't win them elections. Florida and the Midwest have always been key to winning the presidency and while FL has its share of rednecks, the midwest as a whole is more progressive than that. MI, OH, WI, PA. These are the keys to the presidency and it also happens to be where the GOP has been assaulting the unions the most. If the GOP can win back the Midwest they can win back the White House. It just so happens that these people in these states aren't usually the ones to ascribe to the media trickery...they are more simple than that, and i don't mean that insultingly, I'm from the midwest. They look at shyt in terms of how does electing you or your party affect my job...the shyt is cultural here.
