Nolan Ryan's greatness is defined solely by his longevity. He was essentially a compiler who was never really GREAT.
You obviously have to take overall career into account when defining a player's legacy, but I place more weight on their peak. And Nolan's peak is dwarfed by many pitchers who tend to come up well behind him on all-time lists.
Like Kevin Brown.
Outside of strikeout totals, the only thing Ryan did better than Brown was pitch a lot more games.
Look at their best 10-year stretches, which is LONG peak for pitchers.
