So, some of you expect Obama to be MLK or Malcolm X but do you realize he is just as much of a symbolic figure as they were. The fact that a a man who is described as African American by this racist, bigoted society is the president of this country is something that I never thought I'd see and that most African Americans never thought they'd see. Why are so many of you trying to downlay the significance of this? I'm not speaking to the white posters on here because I know you can't realate but as a black man/woman, how could you shyt on Obama for what he has accomplished? :wtf: Just curious to why you would ignore the history of this country and act like his election is no big deal.

you're right: he isn't a civil rights leader. he's our president, the leader of the "free" world, and he happens to be black. too many of our people expect him to legislate from his race, when it would discredit his the significance of his presidency to do so. he is a black man who became elected in a nation founded upon the enslavement of our ancestors, an achievement that is at odds with the still festering wounds of that institution. he does black people a service by NOT trying to be a civil rights icon.

that's not what we need.

I'm not even a fan Obama or politicians for that matter, however he is symbolic in black history, and no one can take that away from him.

I've said over and over that I havent and never will say anything bad about Obama unless it warrants such.

It's nikkas out here who are shortsighted and on the whole, "he aint helpin me out so I dont care about him" that are the ones doing teh criticizing. When he actually is helping you out by improving y/our image in the eyes of many people all over the world. If a damn TV show like The Cosby Show showed white people a different side of blacks, then SURELY the President being black has and will continue to do the same.

Any black person with half a brain knows it's a miracle he got elected once, and then a second term.

Who's calling him a civil rights leader?

I agree with your sentiment here (most intelligent people don't believe he's a civil rights leader,) but to be fair, he himself has made some strained comparisons in that direction for pandering purposes- see his speech on MLK day.

:myman: respond to the thread...

Man, I don't have an energy, I shouldn't even be up at 4AM. The only reason I've been posting so much this past week and a half is to take breaks from this note. Thought I only had to write 25 pages, they ended up liking my idea and said I have to write 35 :sadbron: I'm going to have a lot of long nights and days and be skipping a lot of classes this week.

I don't think anyone considers him one.

You have cats who get pissed at him because he isn't pushing a pro black agenda such as Cornell West and Tavis Smiley. They may not call him one but they want him to act as if he is one. Even posters on here act like his election is no big deal and downplay it like he is just your everyday politician. The hell he is, what that dude pulled off is nothing short of a miracle.

If this isn't about politics, then how come it only matters for some of you when the black person happens to be on your side of the political spectrum?

Where is this thread about Justice Thomas, Senator Scott, Condoleezza Rice? Those are all significant achievements.

I give props to TWISM13, because he TRULY feels this way, regardless of the candidates political affiliation. He sees these positions as stepping stones.

Who elected Obama because he was a civil rights leader? Nobody ever believed that was true, he was elected as a response to 8 years of failed Right wing policies and all hes done is repeat the majority of those failes policies, with a bullshyt ass healthcare plan sprinkled on top.
