Man, these QB extension contracts are ridiculous :dead: Shanny Jr better prove me wrong in the next two season because our window will be fukking closed by 2025/26 :damn:

I'm think 1 year ahead here, but If we do well this season, can Trey and/or Brock held out wanting to get more money for the 2024 camp? :lupe:
If Brock stays upright for the season we got a shot :yeshrug:
To be honest we gonna need him to be fully healthy for the playoffs. Trey better be ready to give us a good 3-5 games in the regular season, I hope he trained in his running because we all know stubborn ass Shanahan wont let him do anything else :mjcry:

Welcome to the 2023 Player Analysis. I will look at the roster and take a look at each player on our team. For those that are new players are graded on an A to F grade based on recent/current performance and potential. Overall grades are not an average but relative to the their current and future value. As per tradition we we will start with the Quarterbacks.

Quarterbacks

Brock Purdy - 2022 Draft Mr. Irrelevant. The final pick in the draft. Usually doomed to a life of obscurity at best and an early camp cut at worst. But due to a season ending injury to both starters Jimmy Garrapolo and 2nd year QB Trey Lance, Purdy was thrust into the starting lineup. In cleanup duty he posted a pretty impressive 13 TDs and only 4 INT and throwing another 3 TDs in the post seasons. Pretty impressive for a rookie. Brock does not have the strongest arm but he is has proven himself to be a pretty accurate QB averaging about a 65% completion rating. Very respectable for a rookie. The biggest beneficiary was George Kittle to whom Kittle passed 8 TDs to. Brock is decisive with the ball and has enough athleticism to avoid sacks and scramble for a few key yards as well. I have heard some interesting comparisons, but I might go with Boomer who basically thought Purdy was a poor man's Joe Montana in the sense that he won't wow you physically but he has very good intangibles. It's clear the organization sees Brock as the QB of the future as they are rushing to get him back into this year's training came and so long as there are no setbacks he is the clear starter. He is already the most accomplished Mr. Irrelevant of all time (hell he is already more accomplished than some current NFL starters). Time will tell if he can maintain this trajectory but with the teams weapons and with Kyle's confidence in him he can continue to improve and develop.

Performance: B
Potential: B
Overall: B

Trey Lance - #3 Pick in the 2021 Draft. Trey Lance has been dealt an unfortunate hand. Injuring himself in game 2 in his first season as a starter, while the season went on without him, the rise of Brock Purdy now puts his future with the team in jeopardy. Trey Lance is clearly competing for the primary backup spot and with the way this team seems to be snakebitten, he would need to stay loose, as he could be called in sooner than expected. Also there may be a possibility Trey Lance lines up as the QB on certain plays or packages, Trey unlike Brock as has great athleticism and elite arm strength, he has the potential to make explosive plays and all reports are that he has worked hard in his rehab and has had his nose in the playbook. It's tough to say if he has a long term future with the team but I get the feeling Kyle Shanahan will find snaps for him as he can contribute in one way or another.

Performance: C
Potential: B+
Overall: B-

Sam Darnold - Sam Darnold was the #3 in the 2018 Draft. Darnold has had a tough go of it since he has been in the league. Drafted to a bad Jets team who did not ever really believe in him, Sam went through the ups and downs that young quarter backs go through, After the 2020 the Jets decided to give up on him and trade him to the Carolina Panthers for a 2021 6th and future 2nd and 4th round picks. Not exactly a kings ransom. Sam has some physical talent but during his stints in New York and Carolina he has a tendency to play hero ball and make reckless throws many of which end up in the hands of the opponent. I think Sam is young enough to fix himself and the 49ers are a successful organization. But a lot of pundits have this fantasy that he will magically fulfill his potential and become a future starter but more realistically, he is the 3rd QB after Brock and Trey and all he really needs to be, even if called to the starting lineup is to be a game manager and take the yards that are given to him. If he can do that perhaps he can rehab his career and at worst he can be a long term backup who can be competent enough in a game situation or play in garbage time in the case of a blowout.

Performance: C-
Potential: C
Overall: C-

Brandon Allen - Longtime NFL backup. Brandon Allen has not started in many games. Brandon is basically going to be on the practice squad as an emergency backup. He is a professional who will probably play a few more years as a backup and end up as a high school or college coach somewhere maybe work in a front office.

Performance: D
Potential: D
Overall: D

Unit Analysis:

The first 2 QBs are not even 24 years old yet, but both of them have bright futures ahead of them. Hopefully with the 49ers. Sam Darnold is about as good as you can get for a 3rd QB. You hope he never has to start but if he did, even he can win a few games with this offensive and conservative playcalling. Brandon Allen does have starting experience but I wonder if we could have signed Carson Wentz for a 1 year cheap deal as I think he is better than Darnold and with the luck we have at QB, we need to be 4 QBs deep with starting experience. But either way, this is a solid unit that if either Brock or Trey can stay upright are good enough to lead a deep playoff run combined with this teams elite weapons maybe even a Super Bowl (with the right matchup).

Unit Grade: B
