So we had a crazy discussion about race today in Anthropology class (Long read)

i majored in ethnic studies and this is what we did in 95% of the classes: read, write papers, shared ideas, discussed everything and presented our research/work. i went to school in san francisco where everyone was really liberal so they all co-signed each other and acknowledged that racism, institutionalized racism and stereotypes had set minorities back and is still alive and strong.
the only time discussions got heated was when religion was brought up, every single time too. everyone was ready to throw down for their god with no second guessing i remember talking about christianity being forced onto ppl throughout history and all hell broke loose.

i think it just depends who you're discussing it with. If ignorant and close minded ppl are involved then yeah, i don't even waste my breath. Some of the best discussions i had about race were in a controlled academic environment or with someone informed about history.

Race discussions with other races are dumb as hell for 3 reasons:

1. No one seriously wants to solve the problem
2. It's just people trying to hash up overly emotional stories/counterpoints to justify why the way they feel is right even if it's some stupid ass shyt
3. There are entirely too many feelings tied into the discussion for your average people to disagree and not feel some kind of way about things later.

Not really tryna explain to SAlly why Jay-Z can say "nikka" and be accepted while Paula Deen can't.

Things you never discuss with people who aren't your real friends: Politics, money, religion, and race.

Man I don't know if it's just my experience but it's always the girls that insist on chiming in. Most dudes have the sense to just sit there with the look. You'd think skinny ass blonde chicks are catching racist shyt left and right. And the dudes who do say it are always those argumentative libertarian type a$$holes. 'I can't get a job because they keep hiring blacks that are less qualified than me.' But the point that we've been through that shyt for ...... oooohhhh..... 150 fukking years goes right over his head.

If I'm in a class and something like rape comes up, I shut the hell up. It's time for me to listen since I don't know shyt about it and have zero experience with the matter. Let my black ass stand up and start talking about 'reverse rape' is more prevalent these days. I'd be kicked out of college and on the front page of some newspaper calling me a pig.

I had a friend get kicked out of a class over this bullshyt. He was at UC Santa Cruz. One of the most beautiful campuses I've ever seen. Walked around all day. 2 black folks. Lotta hippies.
They were watching a film on the LA Riots (you already know what's coming) and then had a discussion afterwards. He ended up having to explain the concept of black rage and got a little heated himself. Was asked to step outside.

The thing about these discussions, is that there's always going to be at least one white person who wants to defend racist actions and say they aren't racist, then turn around and talk about how they're experienced racism themselves. It's hilarious because they're reaching so much with their deflection, head in the sand reverse victimization crap.
