I don’t think she overdoes it either, but she slips on notes. You actually posted a song where she slips. Christina was a one trick gimmick. Monica is much more than that.

I used loudness because she’s almost always showing off her voice’s power and sharpness. Her voice is a statement without the theatrics of Marsha Ambrosius, Teena Marie, Christina, etc.

That still doesn’t make her a better vocalist than Brandy.

I judge by which voice sounds better to my ears and it’s always been Monica to me

Around and after the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, it seemed like she was starting to throw her voice around more.

Kind of like Aliyah, where we would assume she’s going to stay smooth and low key throughout the whole song, but then she cuts you real quick or starts bellowing.

I only picked up on it because my Big sister was a huge Monica fan but my mom loved Brandy. I had to hear them both, a lot during Sunday cleaning lol.

Where does she slip on the song I posted?

She does it a couple of times towards the back end of the middle, while doing runs. She was showing out, but it’s like a car going too fast on a wet road. She losses traction a little bit but she corrects it quickly. It don’t mean much considering how great of a singer she is. If I wasn’t looking for it then I wouldn’t have noticed it. Some singers don’t got it like that lol. Faith Evans afford to miss a thing lol.
