Yes. Group/collaboration albums rarely sell as much as solo albums. It's not as easy as just adding the fan bases of both artists together.

Adding fan bases together is one reason why record sales are not an indication of popularity. Kanye and Jay share fans, some are fans of just one of them, some are casual fans, some may even dislike one of them. With all of that said, those factors do not affect the popularity of those artists. Fans disliking one and not the other, liking one and not the other, and fans liking both does in fact affect the sales of that particular album.

Their combined star power will draw attention to a project even if fans decide not to purchase because they don't necessarily care for one or the other. In fact, Watch The Throne is one of the bigger collaboration albums of recent memory, if not the biggest.

You basically just cosigned my point about group/collaboration albums not doing as well in that bolded part. Watch the Throne was as successful as it was because of how popular Jay and Kanye are. But a Wayne and Drake album would sell more because they're more popular than Jay and Ye.

It's rare that two or more super stars, especially in Hip Hop, collab on an album like that. So of course, it is a rarity that albums like that are successful considering few of them actually see the light of day.

As far as a Wayne and Drake album, that's speculation at best as they have yet to make a collabo album. Who knows if a Drake/Wayne album would be bigger than Watch The Throne.

So now the success of Watch The Throne is based on Jay and Kanye's popularity and not the amount of records it sold?

Watch The Thrones success=the records it sold. It sold those records due to their popularity.
